Hotel
5.0The hotel's rooms are spread out across various buildings of two floors. All the buildings are quite close together- you can easily get to the main-building, restaurants, pool and beach from each one. The rooms are very big. Aside from Germans, there are Austrians, Canadians and Russians in the hotel. They were all fairly cheery, they never had any problems or arguments with one another.
Location
5.0The hotel is right by a lovely sandy-beach. If you go along the beach, you can also see the Paradius Hotel. The Iberostar is the nicest hotel in the whole of Varadero though. The beach is also really lovely. Transfer time from the airport is about half an hour. We were with Thomas Cook and they have very good day trips as part of their program. You really must see Havana if you go to Cuba, otherwise you shouldn't set your hopes too high because the city is pretty run-down.
Service
4.5Room-cleaning is excellent, hotel as a whole is also very well-maintained and is very clean. The staff are very friendly and helpful. One or two people at reception speak a little German, OK for checking-in, but otherwise it helps to be able to speak a bit of English. Room-service is also offered though we didn't make use of it.
Gastronomy
4.5Aside from the main-restaurant there are three more à la carte restaurants- a Cuban, a Mediterranean and a Japanese. We ate at the Mediterranean once, where the food was delicious. Otherwise the food in the main-restaurant is very good. It's very varied and there is also plenty to choose from.
Sport & Entertainment
4.0We didn't make use of the sports facilities. There was though, as usual, a swim-up bar, pool, Wellness, kid's club, kid's pool... Also a very large entertainment team, which offers the guest various different activities all day long, and which performs a very good show every evening on stage.
Room
5.0There is unfortunately only one German TV channel. Well, I guess when you are on holiday that you don't really need a TV. The beds are very comfy and the bathroom is really big- with a bath-tub and an extra shower! The walls of the room are not thin.
Tips and recommendations
As I've already mentioned above, the Iberostar is really the best hotel you can book in Varadero. Telephone costs are very high- if you want to call home from the hotel you should expect a 1-2min call to cost up to €12! If you want to phone with your mobile, you have to register the mobile beforehand (every travel guide will tell you this as well), though you could always send a text. Finally, what I would recommend is swimming with dolphins. It might cost the equivalent of €80 but it is really great fun. It's also only 10 minutes away.
