Country and People
History
Albufeira's story begins with its occupation by the Romans and was then known as Baltum. It transformed to a busy agricultural and commercial area. At that time, the aqueducts, roads and bridges were built whose remains can still be seen.
It was also occupied by the Arabs (called Al-Buhera) and became a city of great commercial importance. The Arabs built the great defensive infrastructure. The Arabic influence contributed a lot to the city.
Alfonso III conquered the city in the thirteenth century and, as a result, Albufeira was annexed to the Kingdom of Portugal.
