The city of Annapolis is located on the Chesapeake Bay, at the mouth of the Severn River. Annapolis is the state capital of Maryland, and also the county seat of Anne Arundel County. The city is situated about 42 kilometers south of Baltimore and about 47 kilometers east of Washington, D. C. Founded in 1649 by Puritan settlers, the city became the temporary capital of the United States of America from 1783 to 1784, after the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The United States Naval Academy was also founded in Annapolis in 1845. Nowadays, Annapolis has approximately 38.400 residents. Annapolis (“America’s sailing capital”) is a popular port, attracting sailors from all over the world. Every year in fall, the world’s largest in water boat show is held in Annapolis. Besides sailing, fishing and recreational boating play an important role.

Getting Around

There is a bus service with eight routes provided by the Annapolis Department of Transportation (ADOT). With those busses, you can get from the old town to all the recreational areas, shopping malls and other sites of interest (day pass for 3 US dollars). Moreover, there are more than 160 taxicabs circulating around the city. The airports BWI (Baltimore/Washington International), Dulles International (VA) and Reagan National (D. C.) are all close by and can be reached by taxicabs or Airport Shuttles (those have to be reserved in advance though). In the warmer months, there is also a water taxi cruising through the Annapolis Harbor (fares around 2 dollars).

Discover and Enjoy

Whether you want to go on a “Pirate Adventure” on the Chesapeake with your kids, to the Annapolis Maritime Museum, to the opera or the ballet, kayaking, sailing, golfing or shopping, or rather spend a relaxing day in the spa, Annapolis offers all that and more.
When you get hungry, go to one of the many restaurants along the shore of the Chesapeake Bay. There, you can not only enjoy the delicious food, but also the amazing views. Besides classic Maryland crabs and seafood, a wide range of international food is offered, for example Mexican, Japanese and Thai. Before you hit the nightlife, you can hang out in one of the many bars, pubs and cafes in the old town of Annapolis.
