HistoryBangkok is Thailand's largest city and the second largest city in Southeast Asia. As it had never become a colony, the local ancient culture and architecture is well preserved. In 1782, Rama I Dynasty moved the capital from Thonburi to Bangkok, which lead to massive construction projects, the construction of the palace, building a wall, and the construction of nine streets, including Chinatown, the most famous street of the three recruits. In the following Rama II and Rama III's reign (1809-1851), the city has constructed many Buddhist temples. During the reign of King Rama V (1868-1910), the majority of Bangkok's city walls were demolished, new roads and bridges were constructed. After World War II the town developed rapidly, the population increased substantially and but the two cities Bangkok and Thonburi merged in 1971 to the Bangkok - Thonburi metropolitan area, known as Greater Bangkok. In recent years, Bangkok grew even faster with skyscrapers. More than 50% of Thailand's industrial enterprises and 80% of higher education institutions are located in Bangkok.
Religion
In Bangkok, about 92% of people are Buddhist, 6% are Islamic, 1% are Christian, 6% are Hindu. There are also a few Jewish believers. Bangkok has about 400 Buddhist temples, 55 mosques, 10 churches, and 2 synagogues.
