Customs / CultureBarcelona is a truly global city owing to its growing importance in international trade, finance, arts, entertainment, media and commerce. It is also one of Europe's most important Mediterranean ports. In other words, the capital of Catalonia has come a very long way since the years of repression under the heel of the dictator, General Franco who died in 1975.
Traditions
Barcelona fought against General Franco and lost resulting in the abolition of Catalonian institutions and the suppression of the Catalan language. Traditions such as Flamenco dancing allowed the people some free expression but it was not until Franco’s death and Spain joining the European Union that Barcelona was able to fully emerge from the dark days of fascist rule. Today, the Catalan tongue and traditions are proudly exhibited in a city that benefitted immensely from hosting the Olympic Games in 1992.
Religion
Mostly Roman Catholic.

Culinary SpecialitiesAdjacent to Barcelona’s port and main beach is Barceloneta, where you will find numerous fish restaurants. Although fish dishes are a staple in Barcelona there is a tremendous choice of restaurants offering classic Catalan fare and Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese and “international” menus.
Lifestyle
Barcelona is a beautiful city that is steeped in history since the times of the Romans. It is one of the richest cities in Europe and its mix of fine weather, geographical location, sophistication and antiquity attracts many wealthy people to take up residence.
Sights
There are numerous sights to see in Barcelona but one of the most popular districts is the Gothic Quarter which lies in the heart of the old city. It is medieval, with some buildings dating from the Roman era, and a delightful place to have a coffee or a meal.
Throughout Barcelona there are fine examples of the work of the architect, Antoni Gaudi. His most famous design has yet to be finished and it is the church of the Sagrada Familia, which has, since 1882, been under construction and is a true wonder.
Barcelona is also rich in museums, art galleries and public spaces and parks. It is also considered to be the finest beach city in the world.
