Modern Turkey is an irreligious republic, however the majority of Turks are Muslims and follow the five basic principles of Islam but is not always strictly enforced. The main characteristic of Islam, as in Arab countries is the belief that God there is one god and Muhammad is his prophet. They pray five times a day and participate in fasting during Ramadan. However, Turkish Islam is more liberal. During Ramadan, the restaurants will however not be closed. Ramadan is a quiet period in Turkey, a day full of silence, but after nightfall a celebration occurs.

Culinary Specialities
The Turkish cuisine has a variety of delicious dishes. The Turkish cuisine is combined with the Greek, Bulgarian and Turkish style. Known to us as a kebab, consists of sliced meat, bread with tomato sauce and vegetables. If you choose a kebab you can order rice or fries instead of having it with the bread. Turkey is also very popular for its Gözleme. These are pancakes with minced meat and spices. If you prefer a lighter soup corba is highly recommended. For dessert the most popular dish is baklava (layers of pastry layered with honey, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, soaked with icing).
Lifestyle / Sights
Bodrum is not a big city and is located on the hillside at a bay. During the holidays, it is lively and full of tourists. Bodrum is known for its discotheques, such as Halikarnas in which there are many international hits played. You can also see the medieval castle of Bodrum and the ruins of the Mausoleum. In the old town the houses are painted white which resembles the Greek houses.Bodrum has two bays, which are full of beautiful yachts and ships. The castle is a sort of symbol for the city which can also be seen on every postcard. It's worth visiting the castle of the Knights of the chapel. The castle has five towers, whose founders had different nationalities belonging to the order of Hospitallers (Knights of St. John the Baptist). In the castle you can see every day used objects and tools and instruments of torture. After visiting the castle, you can see the Mausoleum. Unfortunately the building was badly damaged and there are only a few foundations. An interesting monument in Bodrum is also the amphitheater which lies on the outskirts of the town. It is built into the mountainside and offers about 12,000 seats. The theater has a beautiful view over the bay. There are ferries that can take you from Bodrum to Kos. A ticket for this tour can be purchased at any local travel agencies or at the port. The beaches in Bodrum are beautiful with very soft sand.
