European EU citizens can travel to France with an identity card or passport. Travellers from outside the European Union must have a valid passport for the border.

Climate

Situated in south west France on the river Garonne. The Bordeaux region is said to have an oceanic climate although it has warm summers and Fairley mild winters. The rainfall during summer stops it being classified as a Mediterranean climate.


Language

As in the rest on France, French is the main language, but you will find people that speak English. There is also a sizable part of the population from Italy, Spain, Portugal and Turkey.

Customs / Culture

As one of the most famous wine producing regions in the world. Wine and food forms a large part of the culture in this area. Although the city has a long history, which is reflected in its architecture, the large student population means the city has a lively feeling.
For reference most shops are closed on Sundays and Bank holidays.

Religion

The main religion in the area is Catholicism, followed by Protestants and Muslims.

Getting Around

Airports/ Car rental

Bordeaux has an international airport; Aéroport de Bordeaux Mérignac located 8km from the city center. Hire cars can be easily rented from the airport and main train station.

Public Transport


The city is well connected by public transport. From the main train station you can reach Paris in 3 hours via high speed train, connecting with trains to the major European cities and the Eurostar to London. There are also many regional trains that tourists can take advantage of to get around the region.

Public transport within the city consists of trams, buses (including night buses), an electric bus shuttle and boats on the river.
Taxis are widely available in the city from one of the taxi ranks.

Of course to accompany the famous wines Bordeaux offers a range of foods and fine dining. The most well know speciality is perhaps the Bordelaise sauce, made with red wine and shallots. Often eaten with steaks. Lamb and sea food are found on most menus inn the city’s restaurants. Oysters, may not be something to everyone’s taste, but are worth trying on a visit to the area.

Sights

The city has many museums and buildings displaying fine architecture. The Musée des Beaux Arts is one of the most beautiful painting galleries in France. The botanical gardens of Bordeaux are also worth a visit. The main shopping street in the city, Rue Sainte-Catherine is the place to be seen. This pedestrian zone is full on shops cafes and bars.
