Country and People
History
The area of Cascais has been inhabited since prehistoric times and although there are remains of several Roman villas, it was during the Arab invasion when the area flourished.
Cascais is known in Portugal because in the sixteenth century, the first lighthouse of the country was built here which, unfortunately, has not survived to the present. Its international recognition stems from the fact that the Portuguese royal family liked to spend the summers here.
