Country and People
History
The city served as a stock trade of agricultural products, fish and minerals. Ossonoba (as it was known in Roman times) was one of the most important urban centers of southern Portugal and was conquered successively by Romans, Visigoths and Arabs, even after Portugal's independence in 1249.
One of the sad things about Faro was its partial destruction during an earthquake in 1755.
