Country and People

Customs / Culture
Fethiye is not a large town, it is situated between the slopes of the mountains and the bay. It is very well known as a Mediterranean resort, with not too many tourists in the area. The name Fethiye was attributed to the city because of the first Turkish pilot Fethi Bey. Another suggestion to the name of this city is that the name comes from the word conquest. Previously, the city was inhabited by the Greeks. The city is situated about 12 km from the most beautiful bays in Turkey - Oludeniz Bay.

Traditions / Religion
99% of the Turkish population are Islamic. Most of them follow the religion sannickiego. The Turks reside mostly in Shiite religious areas in south eastern Turkey. Modern Turkey is a secular republic, but the majority of Turks are Muslim and practice the five basic principles of Islam.

Getting Around

Airports / Car rental
The nearest airport is in Dalam about 50 km from Fethiye. Rental cars are very popular however, not the safest transportation method for tourists, considering that Turkish drivers are not the safest drivers. Turkish drivers do not follow speed limits or traffic lights.

Public transport
The most popular public transport are the Dolmus buses. Dolmus buses are very and the prices are fixed, however you can always try to negotiate. It is recommended to pay the bus driver when you are getting off. If you are interested in traveling to further areas you can also take this bus.

Taxis / Infrastructure
Taxis are also available, and each has a taximeter, however when getting into a taxi it is also possible to negotiate on a fixed price.

Culinary Specialities
The Turkish cuisine offers a variety of delicious foods. It is hard to even know what to start with. Turkish cuisine combines the flavors of cuisine: Greek, Bulgarian and Turkish. The most known specialty is the kebab which includes sliced meat on bread with tomato sauce and vegetables. If you prefer to eat a Kebab on a plate you can choose to switch the bread for rice or French fries. For the kebabs on plates you can order a meze, or a cold starters such as cream cheese, slices of melon, pepper, eggplant salad, calamari, yogurt with cucumber and garlic, kofte (grilled minced meatballs), and fish. Another very popular dish is gozleme which are cakes with minced meat and spices. If you prefer a lighter soup dish you can try a Corba. It is very satisfying as it is always served with plenty of bread. You can also order a tomato soup with beans and onion. Along to the food the most common drink to be order is Ayran, a Turkish...

The most popular desert is the baklava (layers of pastry layered with honey, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, soaked with icing). It is very sweet and something to be enjoyed slowly.

Lifestyle / Sights
In the center of the town is a port where you can take cruise ships. Fethiye is a city full of interesting sights, such as rock tombs, castles and an amphitheater. The Museum of Fethiye is definitely worth visiting whilst exploring the city. It contains exhibits from prehistoric times and Byzantine archaeological sites found in the nearby town. Tombs can be visited near the Town Hall (Hukumet Konai). The most interesting one is the tomb of Amyntas lying there since the fifth century BC. The tomb from the outside resembles the Ionic temple and to the west of the tomb stands the Hospitaller fortress. From its walls you can admire the beautiful view of the entire town of Fethiye which lies in Lycia. Not far from Fethiye you can take a unique tour which is a marked mountain trail leading through the ancient cities. In Fethiye, you can also enjoy the picturesque Bay of Oludeniz and visit the ghost town, village Kayakoy.

Good Three Star HotelHotel recommendedtranslated hotel review
Hotel Idee in Fethiye, Turkish Aegean
4.7
Suns
Good three star hotel with good price/performance ratio. Meal selection not very largely, breakfast was very basic, but according to a three star hotel. Food was mostly okay. Excursions offered in the hotel however too expensive. Lots of opportunities for shopping nearby or in fethiye (convenient and easy to use the public. Sales resources to reach). Wi-Fi worked only in the restaurant and not in the room. Overall we would recommend this hotel to others. Read more

we actually fly again and again into the hotel Berlin. We love it, since it is cozy, right on the beach and on the promenade. The hotel was renovated in winter 10/11 very nice and there is a lift now. It is not a four stars hotel, but we also need it not. You can catch a boat or bus to fethiye (about six kilometer), supermarkets, restaurants and other shops are just around the corner. Read more
