Customs / CultureGroningen is a true festival city and also a treat for friends of the theater; in January the pop festival Noorderslag is on, in June/July the music festival Swingin’ Groningen and in August the festival for performing arts (music and theater) Noorderzon. You don’t need to be in Groningen during these festivals, because every day there are performances in Drama, Dance, Music and Cabaret.
The festivals and performances are not the only thing in Groningen; there are many music cafés and 4 Clubs providing for entertainment during the day or late at night.
Traditions
-
- Gronings Ontzet: A celebration that can be seen in the whole city and of course, because the Dutch love them so much, there are fireworks.
- Sint Maarten: Somewhat comparable to Halloween. Just before it gets dark, children go out on the street with lanterns. They go from door to door and sing the Sint Maarten song. After that they
get candy.
- Flower Market on Good Friday.
- At fairs there are always stands full to the brim with candy and other sweet foods.
Religion

Hotel reviews for hotels in Groningen
Small hotel in the center of the city of Groningen in the Netherlands. Can only recommend this hotel to stay for 1-3 days. Because the hotels in Groningen not cheap, this is really a bargain. We paid for the night with breakfast for 2 persons 65. - As it is in the city center, right next to the shopping street, so it's not far to experience. The hotel made a reasonably clean impression, many spots to discover a new coat of paint or could use updating. The toilet is in the hallway as well as t... Read more

Overall I was 4 weeks at the schimmelpenninck Huys, always the same room (number 50 , standard). The hotel had several buildings, the belong together. Partly very angled with the typical Dutch steep stairs. Partly a little tired, but ok for 3 stars and also clean. The rooms were very different. My room had a balcony or terrace with a lovely view of the courtyard with its big trees. Large bathroom, which was with antique Facilities try messingfarbenen fixtures and a large shower head, as well... Read more

Large hotel, the exterior & surface. The cleanliness of the hotel is very limited. We had to for 2 nights 3 x move to another room because either the TV didn't work or the air conditioning. The windows were extremely dirty and full of spiders. When as last a thorough cleaning was completed is questionable! The swimming pool on the floor plenty of sand! In the rooms dust GALORE! In the lobby also plenty of dust, even in the restaurant (don't see under the table or under the ceiling)!!! Spider... Read more
