Lagos, or Lacóbriga, was founded about 2000 BC by Coni. After it was conquered by the Carthaginians, Romans, various barbarian groups and Muslims, it was finally reconquered by the Christians. From Lagos, many Portuguese vessels left to various parts of the world in the XV and XVI century. In fact, many of the sailors were famous in the history of Lagos (the most famous one was Gil Eanes). Because of this, Lagos has been given the name "City of Discovery. "
