Winter is short with temperatures in the day about 16C and at night dropping to 4C. The mountains that surround Las Vegas are topped with snow during the winter but snow rarely falls in the valley.

Local mining resulted in Las Vegas developing as a railroad town in the early days of the 20th century. The construction of the Hoover Dam in the 1930s provided the catalyst for encouraging the growth of a residential population together with the legalisation of gambling. The first casinos were owned by organised crime bosses and by the 1950s casinos and hotels had popped up everywhere. The 1960s saw Howard Hughes buying hotels and casinos which today offer the heady mix of gambling, high class entertainment and luxury poolside living.
