ReligionAlthough there are many churches within Leipzig, religion does not play a big role in Leipzig due to its socialistic past. Traditionally, Leipzig has been Protestant since the reformation.
History
Leipzig was founded in 1165 by Otto II, Margrave of Meissen. During that time the two big churches St. Thomas Church and St. Nicolas Church were build. In 1409 University of Leipzig was founded which is one of the oldest universities in Germany. Since the end of the 15th century Leipzig developed fairs which made Leipzig one of the most important emporiums until World War II. During World War II approx. 60% of the inner city of Leipzig were destroyed. After World War II Leipzig was part of the Soviet Zone and became part of the GDR. Due to that the international importance of Leipzig diminished. However, it was still one of the biggest and most potent cities in the GDR. In 1989 people came together in Leipzig St. Nicolas Church in order to demonstrate against GDR rules. What started as a small gathering became a big movement which was one of the courses that led to the opening of the German Wall.Since then Leipzig has tried to recover and has build a young start up scene. However, the city has still approx. 15% unemployed people.

We had a great time in Hotel Don Giovanni! The Italian atmospere in the rooms, the restaurant and the garden is absolutely wonderful! The room was nicely decorated and romantic. The room was big and very clean! The hotel has a beautiful sunny garden and when you'e sitting in the restaurant inside, it seems like you're in a garden as well, because of all the plants, light and foutains. Pentahotel is great in all respects. Entering the hotel you will come into the large reception hall integrated in the lobby, restaurant and bar all creating the pentalounge, where you can watch TV, read a book, play billiards, etc. Notwithstanding the spaciousness of the room it is very agreeable to be there. There is a fitness/sauna/pool area which we did not use. The hotel has 356 large rooms and there are four elevators at your disposal to reach them.

A quirkily decorated hotel located on the outskirts of Leipzig, the Precise Accento is good value for money. The rooms were a good size and very clean. There is a sauna and small gym room available for guests and we also hired bikes for the day from the hotel at the very reasonable rate of €5 per bike per day.
Good size room with comfortable bed. No fridge,kettle or minibar unfortunately. TV has all German Channels except Eurosport so prepare to learn some German!

This Steigenberger Hotel in Leipzig was my best hotel experience so far and I have stayed in a lot of hotels over the last years.
It is located directly in the city center of Leipzig next to the old town hall. The hotel just opened in 2011 - so it was completely new. Although there is no parking space available, they offer valet parking at a reasonable price (20 EUR first night, 5 EUR every following night). Very nice luxury hotel that is clost to the main train station and also an easy walk to the city center. The staff here is very friendly and responsive to the guest's needs. My room (221) faced a back street and was quiet and very comfortable. They have the standard type of buffet for breakfast but things like eggs, bacon, etc. are prepared for you on a made to order basis. Great hotel and I would definitely stay here again. Read more
