Due to that the international importance of Leipzig diminished. However, it was still one of the biggest and most potent cities in the GDR. In 1989 people came together in Leipzig St. Nicolas Church in order to demonstrate against GDR rules. What started as a small gathering became a big movement which was one of the courses that led to the opening of the German Wall.Since then Leipzig has tried to recover and has build a young start up scene. However, the city has still approx. 15% unemployed people.
