HistoryFounded by the Romans in 79 BC, the city owes its expansion to the industrial revolution, starting in the late 18th century and its prime location next to the countryside and the port of Liverpool. Its location also made it a center for the textile industry, where the climate favored the cultivation of cotton.

The cross over between the former industrial city and the new metropolitan city is what the foundation of the culture is built on.
