Information about Miami

Trip Preparation

Climate
Miami has a tropical climate and offers warm, very pleasant winters and hot summers. In the winter the average daytime temperature is 25C and in the summer it is 32C. During the summer, most of the rain falls and it is always very heavy but in short bursts. Despite the rain, the humidity is high during the summer which can be complemented by the occasional hurricane.

Language
English is the official language but Spanish is more widely spoken owing to the massive influx of Cubans and other Hispanics.

Telephone
The phone networks for landlines, broadband and cells are sophisticated.

Country and People

Customs / Culture
In the 19th Century, the Seminole Native Americans were driven out of Florida although a few descendants still exist. Today, Miami is a mix of European Americans, African-Americans from the Caribbean, and Hispanics mostly from Cuba. To the visitor, Miami is a wealthy, sophisticated city that thrives on international tourism.

Traditions
The various racial groups celebrate their own identities although being American first is always encouraged, sometimes causing resentment. The beaches and the sea almost surround Miami and they are the dominant features of life in the city together with eating out, clubbing into the small hours and keeping cool.

Religion
Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion.

Getting Around

Airports / Car rental
Miami International Airport is the main airport serving the city and it is easy to rent a car on arrival.

Public Transport
Miami has a local commuter rail network and a regular bus service.

Discover and Enjoy

Culinary Specialities
Food is where the mix of cultures is really exemplified and there is a tremendous choice of Cuban, Haitian, Chinese, Greek and classic American cuisine with fish playing a principal role in most dishes.

Lifestyle
To the casual eye, Miami is a wonderful holiday destination full of sparkling glamour and vivacity. Organised crime is a problem but it is a problem for the city rather than for tourists because for both official and unofficial businesses, welcoming tourists is vital for the continued wealth of the city. There is no doubt that the lifestyle for visitors is very attractive especially during the warm, dry, winter months.

Sights
The stunning buildings that appear to rise out of the blue ocean were made famous in the 1980s’ cop show, ‘Miami Vice’ and in the current TV series, ‘CSI Miami’. The weather encourages all year round outdoor activities and Miami has many public parks that are beautifull...

A recent addition to Miami’s cultural canon is the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, which is the second biggest performing arts centre in the USA and home to Florida Grand Opera.
