Country and People

History

Palma was founded in 123 BC by Roman settlers; this has left its mark on the city. After the Island was ruled by the Arabs and later the Island became a haven for pirates. In the second half of the 20th century the Island saw a huge rise in tourism, and this was also evident as many people relocated to Palma from around the world.

Getting Around

Airports/ Car Rental

The international airport is 8 km east of Palma de Mallorca. It is one of the largest airports in Spain, especially in the summer when it receives a huge influx of travellers.
Car hire is very popular in the city, so at the airport or Palma will have no problem with that.

Public Transportation

You can easily navigate the city by foot, it is not too big and all the main sights are close together. The beautiful city is best seen on foot and not through a car window. However if necessary the bus network is very reliable and you are always able to find a taxi.

Cuisine

The local cuisine is very diverse, where dishes are characterized by large quantities of olive oil and garlic. The dishes are light and airy, with lots of vegetables. For local specialties: tumbet (dish of peppers, eggplant, tomatoes and potatoes), arroz brut (rice with vegetables and various meats), frito Mallorquin (minced offal, vegetables and potatoes) and jamón serrano (ham dried in the air).

City and sights

As already mentioned the area does not only just have great beaches and tourist facilities, but the city also hides the true architectural gems. The most famous building, La Llotja, is a 16th century market hall and is now a museum.
In the upper city, in one of the alleys we pass the ruins of the medieval Arab baths, and you come towards the cathedral of La Seu.
Opposite the cathedral is the Almudaina – built in the eleventh century, the seat of the Moorish caliphate, then the palace of the kings of Spain.

The location is excellent on Paseo Maritimo. Half of the rooms have great seaviews. It is worth to pay for that. We had a junior suite on the 15th floor and had a great view of Cathedral. The breakfast was very good. Read more

Good hotel for small congressHotel recommendedHotel photos

We had a 2 days congress there. It is just ideal for smaller conventions as it offers a nice view, is well located and offers in the meeting area free internet. It is not acceptable that they are charging for internet in the room. Buffet breakfast is really great and offers real varieties you would wish. Read more

Well, we will repeat this month. Last month, Janary, we had been there for a night so they have a nice offer of 199 Euros, breakfast included. So, even having a house (countryside) on the island, we take the arrival day for to stay there, go 4 shopping my spouse, go out by night, having breakfast next day and go down to our village. Maybe it's a suggestion for other people having a property at Majorca, but must not rush for shopping or dining to the city. City, well, the only minus is tha... Read more

Quiet, good for a night or twoHotel recommended
Hotel Tryp Bellver in Palma de Majorca, Majorca

The idea of staying in the Tryp Bellver was the same: to touch down in Palma Saturday noon, to go for shopping, dinner and drinking, to stay in a hotel after that and to drive to our village house in the next morning. Such we did. The hotel is quiet ok (as all the Tryp hotels, and with a wounderful situation at the busy Paseo Marítimo. This time, also with a seaview room, so we could enjoy the port view by day and by night. I never would counsel to somebody to spend long holidays over there, ... Read more

Good value, good locationHotel recommended
Hotel Tryp Bosque in Palma de Majorca, Majorca

Good value for money in a good location - 5 minutes on foot to the Paseo Maritimo, 3 minutes to a public bus, 15 minutes by bus to the city centre. Spacious rooms. Different from what was announced on the internet, there do not seem to be non-smoking rooms. We requested one (twice) and were given one smelling heavily of cold smoke. Good cuisine, particularly the morning buffet (although coffee weak). Dinner always had some fish or seafood. Salads are not a strength. A bit of local speci... Read more
