Island paradise
Hotel
6.0We needed a place to escape to, to recharge. We found it in Los Veroles, three self-contained appartments in a beautiful building of traditional style, terracotta-tiled roof, white walls, wide sun terrace looking down the valley to the sea. The view framed with wonderful flowers, bougainvillea, hibiscus, geraniums.... It would suit a couple who like walking/exploring and are looking for a peaceful holiday in a superb peaceful setting.
Location
6.0To get to La Gomera you take the plane to Tenerife, the ferry to La Gomera (one hour) and then bus/taxi or hire car across the island (30 minutes, it is not a big island!) to Los Veroles in the village of Hermigua. It's only a small island but the valleys are separated by high hills/mountains so to explore the whole island a car is necessary. We did not bother - we were happy to stay in the valley of Hermigua, walking and climbng to the adjacent valleys. Food shopping is easy at the local supermarket, and there are a couple of banks but otherwise the shopping is limited. You make your own entertainment or visit the many local bars.
Service
6.0Our hosts, Elke and Michael, are the BEST. They were waiting to welcome us even though we were late arriving, gave me first-aid (I had tripped over in the dark), left us a huge bowl of fresh local fruit, organised fresh bread for us for breakfast each morning and gave us lots of local information, maps etc. Elke speaks English like a native as well as her own German and of course, Spanish. And they even kindly gave us a lift to the port of St Sebastian the day we left so we did not have to get up at the crack of dawn to get the bus! They are lovely people.
Gastronomy
Not availableLos Veroles is self-catering but there are three eating places nearby, El Faro which is basic, cheap and does great fish - it's the local bar: El Silbo which is more up-market with a wider range of delicious meals, again very reasonably priced lovely atmosphere and smashing views from the roof terrace. There is also a German-run restaurant which is more expensive and you have to book, must be good as there were always people there. If you are looking for international cuisine you will not find it within walking distance of Los Veroles but you will find good, local dishes, lots of fish, of course, rabbit and goat stews, as well as pasta and pizzas. The vegetables and fruit is all local and delicious especially the avocados. We ate simply but well and were very satisfied.
Sport & Entertainment
Not availableAt los Veroles you just do your own thing....you can sit on the terrace enjoying the local white wine and simply drink in the view: mountains, flowers, sea. Or you can go walking in the lush tropical valleys. The beach at Hermigua is rocky so not good for swimming but there is a new swimming pool and a sea-filled pool 20 minutes walk along the coast. Or you can do what we did and walk over into the next valley (one hour) and swim in the delightful cove of La Caleta, where there is a bar which serves good food.
Room
6.0Los Veroles is self-catering and comprises a spacious kitchen/lounge (with satelite TV), shower room, and a beautiful double bedroom with wide windows opening out to the view. The accommodation is stunningly simple, furnished beautifully in traditional style. The rooms are checked/cleaned every day, it is beautifully clean and comfortable. We could not fault it.
Tips and recommendations
Los Veroles is perfect, there is plenty of other self-catering accommodation around which we cannot comment on, not having stayed there, but we doubt if any is of the same standard. It is very good value and we were happy to go in January as we needed winter sun and light. Yes, there is mobile phone reception but why would you want to phone anyone when you are in paradise??
Hotel review marks: 6 suns = very good … 1 sun = unsatisfactory
