Nice hotel grounds but in need of renovation

The grounds are beautiful, ideal (this is the last building in the hotel-zone) as a starting point for long walks on the beach. Unfortunately the rooms aren't really Hilton standard, in fact a bit of a turn-off- they need to be renovated. Tastefully furnished, but the rooms need to be repainted. The sanitation facilities are rusty. The bathrooms need a general overhaul. The site is well integrated into the landscape, Bungalows with only three storeys. The chamber-maids are somewhat unmotivated, they really only do the bare minimum. Very mixed and friendly public, guests predominantly French-speaking, lots of Dominicans at the weekend, some Italians, relatively few Germans and Austrians.

A few metres to the beach depending on where you are staying. Shopping and entertainment in Bayahibe and La Romana. Transfer to Punta Cana airport takes about two hours. Lots of possible (but extremely expensive) excursions: to the islands of Saona (very overcrowded) and Catalina, to Santa Domingo, La Romana and the cultural village of Altos de Chavon.

Staff at reception very friendly, competent and helpful. Check-in/Check-out uncomplicated. As mentioned above, the chamber-maids rather unmotivated, only the absolute bare minimum is done every day. Best to call two or three times if you need something in your room fixed. Very competent on-site doctor, also does house-visits. Some of the waiting staff not especially motivated, especially when dealing with women travelling on their own. Only 20% of the waiting staff are attentive and friendly without having received a tip.

Gastronomy

4 restaurants, and several bars spread over the resort. Breakfast is outstanding, choice at dinner could have been more varied, sometimes really very tasteless. Hygienic conditions not a given e.g. as far as ice creams and fruits are concerned.

Sport & Entertainment

Entertainment team is very discreet, not pushy or annoying. Very loud in the pool area during the day. In this sprawling resort you can, however, to a limited extent escape all the noise. In theory a beautiful beach, it was unfortunately not once cleaned during my two week stay (rubbish- empty water bottles, old newspapers, even food- decays before your eyes).

As mentioned above, the rooms are tastefully furnished but in need of renovation. Thoroughly cleaned everyday, floor mopped, hand-towels replaced, wash-basin cleaned. My room (building 1) was very quiet, no noise pollution.
