Don't stay at the Alkaios Hotel
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThe Hotel - The main hotel pool near the bar is OK but very dangerous as it has no depth markings and if walking in flip flops around the wet poolside it's like you're walking on ice. The lifeguard ring is used by kids in the pool! There are only a few sun beds working as most are broken and only a few fixed sun shades. This brought us much amusement as we watched from our balcony the morning battle to claim the best few spots with towels firmly placed down before going off to breakfast! We went to the beach instead, so much better and more relaxing and came back to the pool late afternoon to coincide with these people leaving the pool area to go and get ready for the evening meal at 7.30pm. And yes, they all looked miserable! The hotel upkeep generally is very poor with broken slides, light fittings exposed (in the spa area), broken sun loungers, litter and glasses never cleared up - honestly the list could go on forever.
Location
On the up side Molyvos is a great town and Lesbos a wonderful island and a great holiday choice.
Staff - a couple were friendly (Stratos and Nick) but the majority were very rude and couldn't care less about customer service or just being polite - they just don't really care and standards are very poor.
Gastronomy
The Food - if you like to eat exactly the same dull, very poor quality food for breakfast, lunch and evening meal every day of your stay then you'll be OK here. The food was truly awful by any standards and as a result we ate out every night and only had toast in the morning (we bought our stuff to eat at breakfast). We are certainly not food snobs, far from it, just a normal family but with basic standards.
Sport & Entertainment
The Spa water is so acidic it makes your skin itch and my swimming shorts turned colour from blue to purple!, the spa sun beds are without any pads so very uncomfortable, the spa gym (which is actually 2 worn out running machines, a broken cycle machine and 2 broken weights) is a joke, rubbish everywhere, never clean, the indoor pool water is actually green and is home to the adopted hotel dog and 2 cats.
Room
Our Room - we think we probably had the best room in the hotel, a sea view with balcony, on a top floor. The view is lovely. The bad news is the neighbours dogs bark day and night starting at 6am (not the hotels fault of course), then the pool room noise starts from 6am until 9.30am, a high pitch noise that really gets on your nerves and makes it impossible to sleep and there's nothing you or the hotel can do about it, the air con didn't work, the maid never cleaned the room (they only change the bedding and provide new towels), in the bathroom you get the smell from the next room wafting up through the vents in the floor, the beds are uncomfortable, the pillows have seen better days, the curtains ripped, the floors never cleaned. We really feel sorry for anyone who doesn't get a sea view because the alternative is to overlook the car park, the kitchen bins, or be above the restaurant and bar. All doors slam shut so expect to hear this at all hours.
Tips and recommendations
Our verdict: don't go here, it's not worth the all inclusive price tag! We used it just as a base (we hired a car for 2 weeks from the UK and picked it up at the airport, much cheaper) to explore the island. It's not worth the money and all inclusive is not what this hotel offers. If we could turn back time we would rent an apartment.
