A lovely relaxing hotel in the German countryside
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AAt the start of July I had a lovely relaxing five night break at the Alpenhof.
The staff were warm, welcoming, helping and generally friendly. At the bar, or for afternoon coffee, I never had to wait for more than a few minutes to be served.
Breakfast was good, with loads of fresh fruit. The evening meals were excellent with just the correct portion sizes. One day at breakfast you could see wild deer in the field outside.
My single room (Fagstein) was a reasonable size at 18sqm – the bed was comfortable and the hotel was quiet at night; so good that I slept for 10 hours on the first night!
The hotel is a bit isolated and as a result the local road is very quiet. The 814 bus stop is outside of the hotel with buses at 9.51 and 10.51 to Jennerbahn and 10.07 and 11.07 to Berchtesgaden railway station (alternatively you can walk to either in roughly 25 and 35 minutes). The return busses are at 15.58 and 16.58 from Jennerbahn and 15.45 and 16.45 from Berchtesgaden railway station – I would not recommend walking back as the hill is quite steep.
My day normally consisted of a relaxed breakfast, then bus / walk to either Jennerbahn (Konigsee) or Berchtesgaden. I tended to get the earlier bus back to the hotel each day so that I could enjoy the afternoon cake and coffee and read for a while. This then left plenty of time for a swim & sauna (the swimming pool lounge is great for just chilling with some very comfortable sun loungers – there is even a double lounger. All lounges had nice heart shaped cushions. The Sun Lounge did tend to overheat on a hot day).
If would have been nice to have had a car to attend a few of the evening events in Berchtesgaden, but a taxi was only €10 each way). The sauna was spoilt on when afternoon when a group of fully dresses Americans wandered in and treated the sauna as more of a zoo; there comment was something along the line of “Hey there, they are naked people here, wait till I till the folks at home about this”. The sauna area is clearly marked as a “nude zone”.
I would stay at this hotel again.
