Family Stay in March 2011 - Skiing
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A A2 x good size rooms with one smaller room, ideal for Grandma or 1 child Kitchen is a good size along with 2 x bathrooms. 2 x showers, shame there was no bath after a hard day on the piste. A small detail though!! . Plenty of parking, clean with good facilities on hand. No wifi or internet which is a shame for some maybe?
Location
Otesie is beautiful and the apartment is very close to the the centre of town. A 5 min walk to the lifts to the main pistes though, which is a pain with a young family. Its not doorstep skiing, like some resorts in France, but the beauty of the village makes up for this. Overall, not a big issue with children who can carry there own equipment for 5 mins. There are two ski-schools, One is 50 metres from the apartment, ideal young children just learning, however we took the other one which mean't the 5 min walk. Talk to the owners to recommend the closer one for small children, although we were very happy with the Saslong ski-school we chose.
The family are super friendly, only issue being the owners are speaking German and Italian only. However the son is usually on hand and speaks perfect English. No issues encountered while we were there which needed us to complain.
Gastronomy
The mountain food was good. If you love italian food and robusk mountain cuisine, you will be happy.
Sport & Entertainment
Good skiing area, Alpe di Siusi is great for intermediates or families, although the first 3 lifts on the mountain just up from the resort need to be modernised. Old two manners, that are slow and with queues. However, once you get past these the lifts get a lot better. Alpe di Siusi would not be so challenging for experts but perfect for beginners and intermediates. For more advanced, take the cable car to Secada area and drop down to St Cristina and Selva Gardena, However the lifts here were quite busy - 10/15 mins to take the cable cars to Secada and from the bottom of Selva. It was half term, so I am sure, less busy at non-peak moment. Probably during peak moments like Christmas, Feb half term and Easter is 10/15 mins. For the Selva Gardena area, the pistes were good, steep etc, but I had no chance to get off piste, so cannot comment on this. A lot of people do the Selva Ronda (go round the mountain), I didn't do it as it looked like you are spending most of the time on 200 meter runs, then back on the lifts.
As all the resorts in the Val Gardena area are linked and you can also take a dolomite super ski pass, there should be enough of different types of skiing for everyone, but maybe better to drive to the resort you want with the car/bus, rather than try to ski it..
Room
Good size. clean etc, bedding fine. TV worked but only German and italian. I didn't come for the TV, so not a issue.
Tips and recommendations
beautiful weather, pistes were in good conditions etc.
