Idyllic oasis in peaceful village
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThe Petit Hotel is a former monastery, lovingly and tastefully restored by André and Betsy, your hosts at this amazing little retreat, tucked away in a beautiful little medieval village in the mountains in the northwest part of Mallorca. The rooms are beautifully done: the attention to detail and artwork are impressive. Yet it doesn't feel like a museum; rather, it offers a creature comfort level that encourages an immediate feeling of relaxation and well-being, which is encouraged and aided by the infinity pool and the beautiful garden. I now know that Cava tastes best when enjoyed chilled while sitting in in a jacuzzi in the middle of an orange grove with a view of the mountains.
And the breakfasts! Fresh produce, croissants and bread, coffee, hand-squeezed juice, all of wonderful quality and enjoyed on the terrace. You actually need to enjoy one of their breakfasts to understand why I am making such a fuss about them!
The fact that, in what must be one of the most beautiful parts of Mallorca, we spent long hours relaxing amongst the orange trees, simply enjoying where we were staying, I think speaks volumes about the place.
I wouldn't advise taking young children there. They would of course be made to feel welcome but I get the impression that the target market is the civilised adult market: discerning couples enjoying a quiet break and not in need of the noisy activity centres that can be found in other parts of the island. Older, well-behaved children can work.
André and Betsy make it their personal mission to see that you enjoy your stay in the area and that your every need and whim is catered for: André arranged for us to spend a day sailing up and down the coast with a wonderful fellow, just us and him and the boat, not a crowded tourist-trap boat, a proper sailboat and a skipper to show us around on a custom-made trip. It was a highlight of our holiday!
I said to André on our last day that part of me wants to write this review and part of me wants to keep the Petit Hotel a good secret; my wish to see them do well wins out!
