Small friendly B&B in Pitschen-Ftan
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AHouse built in traditional engadine style with approximately 10 rooms of varying size. From what I saw, different rooms have different styles, although the whole house interior has a modern almost minimalist style within. Views from the room couldn't be better overlooking the mountains and Tarasp Schloss (Castle) nearby. Ps. smoking in this hotel is a big no-no here, even on the balcony!
Location
Ftan is a small rural town with only a few shops. There are a handful of decent restaurants in the area, bakery, mini market and a couple of stores selling curios and art. The hotel is located in Ftan-Pitschen which is a little hamlet adjoining ftan. We went by car, and ftan is reached by a narrow track a couple of miles past ardez. Ideally though, I imagine the train system would be a lot more efficient way of getting to ftan. Note that there is a small farm 100m down the hill from the hotel. The lower engadine is a bit cut off from convenient airports: I think the nearest is Zurich, which is over 100 miles away.
Ftan is a quiet town, and although there are plenty of places to get a quiet drink, it is not for those that are after rowdy bars and clubs.
Couldn't be better. Othmar & Katrin were very helpful with local info. Their website is at (http://www. hotel-muntfallun. ch/), and they were happy to answer my enquiries in a frank & straightforward manner.
Gastronomy
Breakfast was continental (cereals, croissants + jam, cold meats etc.). There are also tea making facilities in the common area where you can make yourself a tea or coffee at any time of the day or night. The breakfast area is in a wood panelled room which is markedly different to the rest of the house. It gives the impression that you could be sat in a wood log cabin while you have your breakfast.
Sport & Entertainment
Hotel garni munt fallun appears to be very much catered towards the hiker (in the summer anyways). Lots of information can be had for walks in the area (of which there are many), and there is a sort of staging room where you can store all your hiking gear (and presumably ski gear during winter). A peculiarity is that you have to wear house slippers when indoors, no hiking/ski boots allowed. This wasnt a problem for us, but if you are funny about this sort of thing, bring your own slippers!
Room
Hotel room was kept tidy and bed was very comfortable. Communal areas were kept immaculate. As previously mentioned, we were in room #8, which had a nice view, but i think most rooms would have had a decent view of the mountains.
Tips and recommendations
Ideal, if you are keen on walking or skiing.
Thanks Othmar! (from Edward Peggs).
