Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThe Arena Inn was a surveyable, confortable hotel and not just a big square building. The building was very pretty and the area well-kept. Downtown, the harbor, and beach were easily accessible and the laguna was great to see! We booked 2 weeks all inclusive (double room, flight from Köln) for 700€ per person and really can't complain about the price!
The opinions of this hotel are very varied, but many people forget what country they're in, in another culture, and how much the Egyptians earn and how much they themselves paid for their holiday...
There has been so much written about this hotel that I can hardly say anything new. I'll try to find a few new things.
Location
The area was perfect to relax, swim, and get some sun. El Gouna is really romanticly situated and compared to the rest of Egypt it's cleaner and richer. Everything you could need (bank, ATM, souvenirs, bars, restaurants) is within walking distance or cheaply reachable with the tuktuk.
The way to the beach (10 min.) didn't bother us. On the other hand, you can take the shuttle boat and wonder at the laguna.
Cairo and Luxor were a bit more difficult to reach, but these tours and other excursions were offered for cheap prices.
We found the hotel staff to be always friendly and polite. We were greeted, asked how the day was, directly helped, and it was always fun. You could get far with English, or maybe a little German.

At first, we had to get used to the food, but that went fast. I didn't think there were any faults with the the choices or variety of food. There was beef, chicken, lamb, duck, cevapcici, fish, pasta, vegetables, casserole, pizza, small salad bar, lots of good sauces and dressings, cakes, puddings, fruit, etc. We thought some sauces were really delicious, others not so much. Potatoes weren't like in Europe, but that wasn't important. Breakfast was completely ok, there wasn't a large selection of meat and cheese, buf instead I had my own pancake or omelet man.
We thought it was a very comfortable restaurant and there were enough servers to bring drinks and clean the table. I'm on holiday and can wait 2 minutes for my coffee or beer.
The pool bar had a huge selection of drinks, including beer, beer-sprite mix, wine, and long drinks.
The beach bar didn't serve alcohol, but soft drinks and some food was available there with all inclusive.
Sport & Entertainment
There wasn't really any entertainment. Twice a week there was dancing; billiard tables and volleyball field, ping pong were also available. The atmosphere was more quiet, and at nights we talked or played in snall groups. The hotel had a souvenir shop, you could find anything there.
The pool wasn't huge, but instead the beach was very nice. You should also know, that SOMETIMES the water was very shallow, you could walk 600 meters out to the reef. Behind that, you could really swim and snorkel.
Room
The room was a bit older and small - just like the balcony. But everything was clean and the laundry was always fresh and smelled good. Tv and air conditioning older, but ok. The double room had 2 separate beds that we pushed together, it wasn't a problem. Sometimes it smelled a bit musty, which had to do with the older ventilation and batrhroom. Safe, hair dryer, electrical outlets available. Because of the Egyptian 'good weather guarantee' that means you'll always be outside, the room should really be ok for a 2 week holiday.
Tips and recommendations
Excursions could easily be bookedand were worth it. a 1 day bus tourto Cairo was 70€, a snorkeling with dolphins and quad tour were 25€ each. Everything went well and there was always food available. There also weren't any safety convoys anymore for the tours, we felt safe everywhere! If the room is too small, you can book the larger, newer, and more modern apartments (including 2 flatscreen tvs, quiet air conditiong, huge balcony, kitchenette, etc.) for a higher price. We also didn't use the dining-around offer for the Steigenberger or Sheraton Hotel because we were always satisfied ;-)- Besides that we had just small stomach problems and always ate salad, ice, etc.
