The best in the area *
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThe hotel is nice from the outside and is also good for a postcard view. Inside it looks like something you would get in the 1920s, when it had its prime. But it is quite nice. Everything was very clean. We had no food, but you can eat in the hotel restaurants, if you get the right vest (jeans are apparently unwanted).
Location
Now in my title: The best in the area. There's nothing. Apart from the hotel, the "place" 2 "restaurants" (one with greasy food and one where we wanted to eat breakfast, but we changed my mind. If you walk up the street of Mt. Ruapehu ski field is ski, where in February but of course nothing was going on there. In the other direction, you can walk to a gas station and a hostel. Just down the road there is scenic flights over the 3 volcanoes (one of which is Mount Doom). The pilots were all very nice and it was worth the money.
The service was friendly and unassuming.
Gastronomy
The restaurant in the hotel is very smart and requires appropriate wardrobe. We did not eat there since it was quite expensive. But don't order cocktails in the lobby! Expensive and nasty!
