Review of Hotel Belvedere, Wengen, June 2011
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AMedium size hotel built nearly 100 years ago in the art deco style, full of character and old-world charm. Spread over 5 floors, but there is a small lift. We were on half board with an additional packed lunch. Staff very friendly and helpful, spoke good English. Have stayed there 6 times, already booked for 2012
Location
Situated about 10 minutes uphill from station, but they offer a station pick-up on an electric buggy. South facing rooms have stunning valley views from most rooms. Plenty of places to visit using excellent local train system, or on foot. Spectacular mountain scenery everywhere. Airport transfer about 3 hours from either Zurich or Geneva.
All staff very friendly and helpful when we were there. Small selection of leaflets/maps, and there is a tourist office in the village. Also small "library" of books guests have left.
Gastronomy
Restaurant is self service with range of different main courses, salad bar, soup, cheese board and selection of desserts. My wife is not a big meat eater but was always able to assemble a veggie option. Waiting staff very efficient and professional. Sometimes have large parties just staying one night on-tour, but never a problem. A tip - wine is quite expensive in Swiss hotels, so order the 50cl house wine (17 SF) and a jug of tap water and drink slowly! This year the food was the best ever. There's a comfortable bar with mountain views on clear days, and an outside veranda.
Sport & Entertainment
There's internet access (payable) but no pool or spa. Hiking can be arranged through the tour operator reps and the tourist office.
Room
Rooms range from small north facing to larger south facing, some with balaconies.
Many are best described as "alpine chalet" in style ie beams and quirky shapes. TV, safe, telephone, hair dryer, modern bathroom, but no minibar or coffe maker. Beds comfortable, rooms cleaned daily, linen changed a couple of times duing week.
Tips and recommendations
Mobile worked fine in the area. Weather can be unpredictable in June when we visit so need to be prepared for occasional rain - we carry those ridiculous looking ponchos! Brilliant area for hiking, or use trains to see the sights (may be cheaper to buy rail pass0
