A good hotel, but not necessarily suitable for everyone *
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThe Calipolis is a medium-large, modern and renovated hotel in a great location. It's very orderly and attractively arranged - certainly fits its four stars. The guests are about 80% homosexual (something I didn't know beforehand), such that other guests are automatically considered the same. There are guests from every country, but mostly from Germany and England.
Location
The hotel is right on the promenade, about 30m away from the beach. In between there is only the street. The walk to the cafes, restaurants, and shops is only about 2-4min - everything is very close. It takes about 10-12 minutes on foot to get to the commuter train to Barcelona (to arrive at the downtown takes about 35-40min). To arrive from the airport with a taxi is about 30min, depending on the traffic situation (early morning maybe 1 hour!). Right across the hotel is a spa.
Very pleasant and competent staff. They speak Spanish, England, and some German
Gastronomy
There is an à la carte restaurant ( I didn't try it out) and a great breakfast buffet with everything. Rarely found such a hearty breakfast in Spain. In addition there is a bar that stays lively until late evening. I didn't bother to mix much with the non-heterosexual crowd, though.
Sport & Entertainment
There's not much in the way of entertainment - there's the bar but no sports activities or other programme. But the beach is right outside the door, and there's also plenty to do in Sitges. Near the entrance of the hotel there's a kind of pool - something like a big water tub where guests can refresh themselves a bit in the hot weather. Since it was November when I was there, it didn't have much use then.
Room
The rooms are very large, roomy, and have everything you need. The rooms in the front have a balcony and direct view of the sea. There was no problem with noise, though it was November when I was there. I imagine it could well be quite loud in the summer.
Tips and recommendations
A great hotel, that leaves no wish unfulfilled. And Sitges is a very nice, pleasant town completely lacking the Mallorca-party scene atmosphere. The only downside in my opinion to the Calipolis and to Sitges as well is the overwhelmingly homosexual culture. Certainly nothing to really discuss about, and perhaps it's just something that takes places every autumn there.
