Hidden gem with a dream beach *
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThe Chaaya Blue is located in the former crisis area of Sri Lanka from the days of terrorism. For two years, this conflict has been resolved, but the territory is very strongly monitored. If guard posts on the way to the hotel make you rather uncomfortable than secure, the trip can not be recommended until there are more peaceful times. The long journey on the badly drivable street (during civil war times no investments were made here), demands a little stamina, but is worthwhile!
The hotel itself was completely re-built after the tsunami and is therefore in a totally new and high-quality condition.
The rooms are well appointed and have a direct view of the sea from the balcony.
Next to hotel rooms there also seemed to be bungalows, which we didn't test, however.
The pool is relatively small but with the lovely beach and the sea, none of our group had any yearning for chlorine:)
The beach is far stretching and has fine white sand.
You can walk quite far into the sea and it was wonderfully warm. Since Trincomalee generally does not have much tourism yet, there are no vendors on the beach. The local fishermen can be watched as they catch fish and sort them.
A diving school is attached to the hotel, which offers boat trips (with snorkelling) to the nearby Pigeon Island. We tried that and we can only recommend it, as the diving guides are very friendly and always willing to help where they can.
The food was very good and there were even front cooking areas, one in the outdoor area and one in the inside of the hotel (the food is set up in a fully air-conditioned buffet room, but is consumed on the open terrace with a sea view).
