Chez Sophie was a treat
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A APreviously a 3 story home built in the 1800's for a well to do owner, it has been renovated. On the cool rainy days during our stay, wood was always burning in the fireplace, main floor, that scented the living room. It has a view of the stream and adjacent woods. Our room was clean and the bed comfortable.
Breakfast was included that consisted of fresh breads, an assortment of jams, eggs from their own hens an 1/8 of a mile away, coffee, juices, cheeses and a choice of several fruit juices.
Location
Located in the small community of Sagy, there is a pharmacy, MD, a smallish grocery store, but the city of Louhans in a short drive away that has everything. Grazing cows are Chez Sophie's neighbors and the 300 year old church regularly rings out the hour as well as the call to services. Chez Sophie is on a small stream, but was much larger as a result of the heavy rains. Country roads abound just of the front door. Being a runner and I found the beauty of the farmlands and the fresh air delightful. Maybe too much so, as one morning I became seriously lost, and what was planned as a 1 hour run, turned into three hours. A couple of farmers repairing a tractor with a patience for my poor French helped me. I now have a Garmin GPS watch.
Personal. Right sized. Casual and warm. The owners 3 delightful children are out and about in the huge lawn and it feels more like family than being a guest. Anything we asked for was immediately provided.
Gastronomy
Sophie offers dinners where everything is farm fresh and prepared from scratch. Wines are included in the meals and guests are encouraged to ask in advance for the type of meal that they would enjoy. Short of that, there is the menu of the day. Wines are included with dinner. Her restaurant is next to Chez Sophies and is a great place for dinner conversations with other guests from other countries. Sophie's personality is so full of energy and humor that it's hard not to grin as she participates in the dinner talk.
Sport & Entertainment
Great place to hike, run and explore. As in most of France, when you're walking next to the road, it's wise to keep a close eye on traffic. The concept that the pedestrian has the right of way isn't accepted here.
This is a place to relax and enjoy nature, but not night clubbing.
Room
We had a large room, I think it was called Chambre d' Oro, but I'm unsure. It was well appointed, clean, comfortable and quiet. There was a TV, and the bathroom was tiled and included a shower.
Tips and recommendations
It helps to speak some French. Across the street there's a larger restaurant, but not the same ambiance and personal service as Chez Sophie. We enjoyed our stay, we were made to feel welcome and the dinners were top drawer.
