Old favorite in Wengen
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThis a family hotel now run by Karl Fuchs who is the third generation manger. It is a very friendly hotel with a low key atmosphere and where all my needs are cared for. It is next to the train (cog wheeled) station so at the end of a tired day I do not have to walk through the town to get to my refuge. Families and children are always welcome and there is a large selection of toys for them to play with.
Location
The location is perfect for starting and ending hikes. There is only one street in Wengen so everything is close and no cars.
Most of the staff stays at the hotel for many years, a fact which says how well staff is treated. Most staff speak at least German, English and Italian, as well as Spanish. There is no washing machine but the hotel will wash your laundry on request. Mr Fuchs is always available to provide hiking information; weekly the hotel leads hiking trips. The only problem is what is easy for them may be very difficult for you.
Gastronomy
Breakfast and supper are served. Breakfast is a buffet with meats, cereal, yogurts, juice, breads, cheese, and eggs which you can boil yourself. Coffee and hot chocolate is available at the table. Supper is served and it consists of five courses : a small starter course, soup or juice, a salad bar with many fresh vegetables and greens and swiss smoked meats, a main course with more than enough food and desert. The meals are often theme meals like a swiss barbeque, or Italian night. Food is delicious and often very creative. Once a week they have a desert buffet which is an overkill with too many delightful caloric treats
Sport & Entertainment not available
Room
The furnishings are modest with no minibar, small tv, and the most wonderful view from the balconies if you get rooms which look out on the Jungfrau. I appreciate the lack of excessive facilities because I want to unwind and not be highly stimulated. The rooms are quiet, the beds are comfortable with down comforters.
Tips and recommendations
We used the room telephone to make interntional calls and the prices were low. For medical emergencies, there is a doctor in Wengen and helicopter availability if a hospital is needed. Last visit was possibly our tenth time at the Eiger. For us it is like coming home.
