Boutique beach hotel, incredible artwork, fishing
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A A13 basic rooms with tiled bathrooms, balconies either facing the Pacific (on the beach) or facing the village (shade). Clean. A huge inspiring great room is filled with incredible artwork by contemporary Nica artists and it was hands-down the most relaxing place that we visited on our month-long trip. Breakfast is not included, but for $35 / night with AC we weren't really expecting that anyways. The clientele were well-to-do Nicas, expats, and random travelers and tourists from Canada, the US, and Europe.
Location
Casares is an authentic fishing village so don't expect a manicured fake tourist town or you'll be disappointed. If you're looking for a classy place to relax and feel at peace with real Nicaragua on the beach right in front of you, it's worth coming. There's a beautiful waterfall and nature preserve a few kilometer inland, and the tropical dry forest in the surrounding hills make for some great horseback riding. We went out fishing with one of the local fishermen and caught some great tuna, mackerel, and white fish. The surf is fantastic around there as well (you can rent boards in neighboring La Boquita).
The service is great, but most of the staff speak Spanish only. The owner, who lives there, is French and he can help with anything that comes up.

The restaurant is great. $4 breakfasts. Grilled fish about $7; lobster $15. Also chicken and steak dishes. The pasta dishes were a nice break from standard Nica-fare.
Sport & Entertainment
There's no pool, but the Pacific Ocean washes up right outside the balustrade. Pool table and slot machines.
Room
Tiled bathroom, shower, wash basin, toilet. Two pieces of original art. AC. Balcony. Fantastic views! The beds are basic, but comfortable.
Tips and recommendations
Bring a couple of good books and walk around at the fish market in the early morning hours, which takes place on the beach adjacent to the hotel. Internet service is available. I know locals had cell phones, but I left on vacation without mine so I'm not sure if my US would work or not.
