Fantastic wintersport holiday in Wagrain
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AWe stayed for a week in one of the 23 rooms in the main hotel. It was a large double room with an extra bed for our son, who is 15 years old. The hotel is conveniently situated in the centre of Wagrain with good connections to the skiing areas. The hotel is spotless and very well maintained. It is obviously a family-run hotel where the guests are greeted as though they are friends of long standing. We stayed half-board which meant that we could enjoy not only an extensive breakfast but also the outstanding evening meals.
We are a mixed nationality family, British father, Dutch mother and a British/Dutch youth of 15. With our German language being a little rusty, it helped a lot that the hotel owner speaks perfect English.
Location
The hotel is situated in the center of Wagrain. One of the cheapest ski-rental shops is directly across the street from the hotel. There is a parking area behind the hotel with access to the hotel's heated ski-room, where the skis and boots can be stored and dried.
The central square in Wagrain is within 50 metres and contains a couple of banks, a few shops and, during the winter, a very large snowman. There is a Spar supermarket within 5 minutes walk. Bus-stops for the ski busses to Graftenberg (and then further to the Flying Mozart) and Rote 8er are at the central square and the bus to Kleinarl stops opposite the hotel.
The staff of the hotel are very friendly and helpful. Our son took part in the Dutch Skiing Nationals which meant that we needed to be on the slopes at 8.15 in the morning. Breakfast starts in the hotel at 8.00 so we could have had a problem, but the staff made breakfast available half an hour earlier so that we could start the day with enough energy. On competition days we needed to be at Zauchenzee for 7.30 which meant leaving the hotel at 7.00. On these days the father of the hotel owner, who always rises at 6.00, very kindly made a couple of fresh rolls and left them at reception for us.
Gastronomy
The food was excellent! Breakfast was standard fare with the usual selection of serial, various types of rolls and croissants and either sweet or savory fillings. In addition eggs, prepared in various ways, and bacon or ham was offered.
For the evening there was always a four course meal with a choice of a meat, fish or vegetarian main dish, which you selected at breakfast. Without exception all the meals were very well prepared and presented, and tasted great! There was also a children's menu but we didn't use it.
Sport & Entertainment
All the rooms have free internet access. The sauna area is in the cellar and composes a sauna, steam-room, whirlpool and lounge area. Fresh towels were available every day and the area was, just like the whole hotel, spotless. Bath-robes are available on request.
Room
We had a large double room with an extra bed for our son. The bathroom had a bath, shower and wash-basin. The toilet was conveniently separate from the bathroom. We had a small balcony which caught the sun each morning. There was more than sufficient storage space, a television, safe and a bureau.
Tips and recommendations
The only tip we can give is: when staying in Wagrain stay in Hotel Schattauer. It has all the modern facilities with good, old-fashioned family service and helpfulness. The staff were always smiling and friendly, and put themselves out to make our stay enjoyable.
