Iberostar Varadero-pros and cons *

Evening entertainment (certainly the best evening animation that we had previously seen in the Ibero-Stars), cleanliness, the beach, unassuming friendliness of staff, selection of food and quality of food; enough sunbeds in a rather narrow stretch of beach (especially after Hurricane Irene passed by); sea: warm, clear and clean (not many fish, however mussels were to be found again and again); good selection of cocktails
Bad:
Worn out mattresses, damp climate including a salamander in the room (junior suite, so we had to change from 2002 to 2030); almost too many guests (obviously the hotel made sure to occupy rooms by local Cubans for some week ends so not enough sunbeds and too many noisy Cuban weekend nights), slow, expensive Internet connections (1h: 10 CUC or wireless 3h: 20 CUC)
Tap water had a strange "chemical" taste, no original Coca-Cola.
Recommendable: Havana day trip with cigar factory tour (taking pictures there is prohibited). In late July to mid-August, these factories are closed for vacation! We went to a private German-speaking guide (very good: Noel from Ecotours! Cost 1 car KIA including lunch for 3 P: 287-CUC)
Conclusion: The Iberostar Varadero is one of the top three hotels (according to taxi drivers) and above that they are ideally suited for families with children. However, 5 star Iberostar hotels in Mexico and in Dom. Rep. are qualitatively better.
In addition, Cuba is famous for having almost everything state-owned (mainly bus companies, restaurants), this means for example no american guests; no original Cola.
