Got a cheapy Ryan Air flight from stanstead to salzburg (1 3/4hr flight) then picked up our hire car and drove the scenic route to Leogang stopping at a wonderful castle in the mountains (Weher?) on the way (plus a million stops for us to jump out of the car to take in the breath taking scenery!). You can go a more direct route which takes you through Germany and this takes about 1 1/4 hours or you could fly into Innsbruk which is about 1 3/4 hrs from Leogang.
loved seeing all the grassy ski runs and how they prepare the areas. The cable cars and toboggan runs were all still running and we were there for midsummer night whereby they keep the cable car open late and everyone goes to the top of the mountain where they hand out flaming torches and everyone lights fires all over the mountains-it was magical-fires burned even at the very tops-we dont know how people got up there!
Our hotel package incl free hikes by a guy called Crazy Willy and his lovely dog, Lady. These hikes were our favourite parts as they got you to the really remote parts that no one else sees-it was very canadian in places and round every corner was another stunning view or waterfall. Conveniently, after an hour or so of hiking, no matter how remote we were-Willy always stumbled across a (much needed) austrian hut for an ice cold beer up a mountain!
We also took the mountain pass road http://www. grossglockner.com/ -also stunning-loads of cyclists and bikers try and get up there-we preferred the car! Plus there are so many huge still lakes where you can just go and sit/swim/sail or picnic.
The trains looked awesome too-a good way to travel and lots of cycle routes (our hotel incl free bike hire) so another good way to get out there in the countryside.
There were also some ice caves that we didnt have time to visit-infact there was loads we didnt have time for which is why we'll def go back.
