Excellent hotel - thoroughly recommended
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThe Hotel Langgenhof is a family-run hotel with a popular restaurant. It has 30 rooms on 3 floors. A lift is available. Most of the rooms were built in 1996, extending an older farmhouse, so the facilities and fitments are modern but in a traditional style. The cleanliness is excellent throughout and the decor is traditional but tasteful.
There is some parking at the hotel, but in high season you may need to use the underground carpark 5 minutes walk away.
Location
The hotel is in a quiet residential suburb of Bruneck, about 10 minutes walk from the town centre.
Bruneck has a nice little old-town with a good variety of fairly up-market shops and many restaurants and cafes. One thing that surprised us was that pretty much everything in town closed between noon and 3pm (out-of-season, at least).
The surrounding Dolomite mountains offer great hiking, skiing and biking. Bruneck is very close to the Kronplatz ski centre. For hiking, Bruneck makes a good base if you have a car.
The family and staff are very friendly and welcoming.
Although most guests speak German, the staff went to extra effort to accommodate English speakers, providing translated menus especially for us. Several of the staff speak excellent English, and language was never a problem.
We arrived late at night and left early in the morning, and in both cases they kindly made special arrangements for our meals. Our room was kept spotlessly clean.
The staff were also very knowledgable about the local area and were happy to provide suggestions for hiking, even loaning us maps.
Gastronomy
The food was outstanding. We had half-board, with a fixed five-course meal each evening and every course of every meal was exceptionally good. A great variety of excellent quality food, beautifully cooked and presented.
Breakfast was a fairly standard buffet of breads, cold meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, cereals, yogurts and fruit.

Room
Our double room (I think we had a "superior") was very comfortable, with a wide, high-quality bed and spotless bedding. There was also a sofa that converted to a bed, but we didn't use it. The other furniture, and floor, was good quality solid wood. The heating and ventilation worked great and unobtrusively.
The bathroom had new, high quality fixtures and worked perfectly.
Both bedroom and bathroom were a good size, and we never felt cramped. There was also a balcony.
There was a telephone, safe, TV and a (pay-per-minute) wired internet connection. I don't think there was a fridge or any drinks-making equipment.
Tips and recommendations
We visited Bruneck in-between the Summer and Winter seasons, so it was quite quiet - except for the annual Stegen October market, which was worth a visit.
We drove up from Verona airport, which is a very easy drive and takes about 3 hours (or 4 if you miss the turn-off like we did...). Note that this is a toll road, so keep some Euros to hand. Also, note that the motorway signs don't always show junction numbers, road numbers or even town names - often, just the valley name (in this case "Val Pusteria") is shown.
