Luxury, golf and spa hotel in the Sierra Nevada *
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThe Sensol hotel is a new golf, spa and thermal bath hotel of the Spanish Masa group. This group built the surrounding Camposol residential area in which this designer hotel is imbedded. The owners of the Masa buildings are retired British who are migrating because of decreasing purchasing power and/or their age. Some of these buildings which are generally badly built are for sale, "se vende". It's a weird and contradictory hotel area. It's technically excellent but economically absurd. A luxury hotel in the middle of nowhere!
For sale, "se vende" for rather low prices.
Location
As already mentioned, the hotel's in the middle of nowhere but surrounded by excellent freeways. The hotel just doesn't have the money to provide a transport possibility to the only supermarket in Camposol, "Consum".
Without a rental car, the hotel guests are just stuck here.
The water supply in the desert area around the hotel takes place with 2 Reverse Osmosis liquid filtration facilities and a sewage plant for the golf course. The bathing beaches of Bolnuevo, Puerto Mazarron and La Azohia are within 12 to 40 kilometers. The super luxurious "Hacienda Alamo" golf and housing complex is about 30 kilometers away. I visited it and found a ghost town! Great playgrounds but no kids, luxury villas but no guests.
Even the highly praised major golf and beach projects of Polaris World, La Manga, etc. already have financial difficulties. I couldn't understand the sense of the huge investments in these gigantic tourist projects.
Given the bad revenues of the hotel, the really low-paid and rather badly trained hotel staff tries to make the guest feel well here. You've read it correctly, I was the only hotel guest who had booked a golf package for more than 7 days. This hotel is obviously adapted to the requirements of the Spanish weekend guests. You could see that from the choice of TV stations, as there's only DSF for the German guests, for example, so you could play golf, use the spa, watch DSF and go to sleep. Dinner isn't served till 8.30pm, try to go to sleep late with a full stomach! Moreover, the menu is absolutely unchangeable, and the chef is taking good care of the overweight and the health of his non-Spanish guests, he offers huge servings from his strict menu, but the food which was served was just inedible. So you most certainly lose weight here, and that's included in the room price.
A big compliment to David, the head of the restaurant. Unfortunately, he's fighting a lost battle.
Gastronomy
There are the "Comodore" restaurant and a bar in the basement. In the clubhouse of the golf club opposite of the hotel, you could eat sandwiches, burgers and horrible pizza. The staff is, as I said, really cordial and understanding, but what could they do! On the weekend, relief waiters came to serve the Spanish weekend guests. You could then talk about different table manners. The Spanish guests paid, believe it or not, 50 euros for the weekend stay with fullboard for 2 people.
Sport & Entertainment
Golf, golf, the spa area and the gym were excellent and completely equipped, there's really nothing missing. Outdoor facilities are available but only used in the warmer seasons.
Room
I'm still in the hotel, in a Feng Shui Suite with my own sauna. The bathroom is comfortable and functional, there are 2 terraces, a big lounge, a separate spacious bedroom, it's on the 2nd VIP floor which can only be reached with an elevator key. As mentioned above, I'm all alone on this floor with about 50 rooms. The furnishings of the rooms are excellent.
The room cleaning works perfectly, well, just for one person!
Tips and recommendations
The hotel's just suitable for golf lovers. Arrange a golf package including green fee and buggy with Mrs. Rosa Maria Hernandez, but only with breakfast. A rental car at San Javier airport was a must and was almost 60% cheaper than in Camposol. Restaurants and supermarkets could be found by car in Mazarron and Cartegena. Nice bathing beaches could certainly be found in Bolnuevo and Al Azoha, buy beach chairs and umbrellas on site and bring them along. My friend and solo entertainer here is my laptop. The hotel provides free and unlimited WLAN which I'm making full use of.
