Nice beach hotel, but for sure no 5 star standard
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A ALarge hotel with international visitors, mainly from West- and East-Europe. The resort is already visible aged. Nice garden. We had mixed experience with cleanliness (e.g. old bird droppings on restaurant chairs and floors). The focus of the hotel is to provide all activities around beach holidays - but don't expect it on a Shearton 5 star level - more on a 3+ star average.
Location
El Gouna is a very nice, man-made area - about 30 minutes away from Hurgada airport. Elegant shops, restaurants and bars. They have a big Marina with very impressive boats there. Looks like to be a secure area. The hotel is conveniently located on the beach and is offering all kind of (mainly) watersports activities. They have some boutiques within the hotel. Clothes, jewelry and souvenirs.
The staff is very friendly, basically willing to provide service and is able to communicate in a good English language skills. We have had very good experience with some of the service people there: Hamada from front desk was extremly helpful and very impressive service oriented. Ahmed was responsible for room cleaning and did also a fairly good job. On the other hand we have had also annoying issues. For example, we had a problem with internet connectivity in our room. We called guest service center and they promised to show up in the room to fix within 5 minutes, but nobody show up. After one hour and 3 more vain attempts to get support, we decided to skip the in-room internet and go to the beach instead of wasting more time.
Gastronomy
We were on half-board plan. The main restaurant is offering a various number of authentic Egyptian food and international dishes. The service in the restaurant was - depense on the waiter - everything from very poor to extremly good. The first day was very disapointing for us. We got one of the worst tables there, nobody came to take orders for our drinks and finally nobody removed the plates from our table. We were very upset and considered seriously to change the hotel. The very next day, we had a completly different experience and the service level increased from 10 to 100%. Special thanks to Email from restaurant service for his great and charming job.
Make sure to visit the "Oriental 1001" restaurant. It offers a various number of authentic Arab food. Very delicious. Half-board guests will get a 60 L.E. credit.
Sport & Entertainment
Water sports activities is the main strenght of the hotel. They have also a diving center called TGI. Even we are certified divers, we didn't use it. They seems to be pricey. The beach was nice and almost clean. The beach service run out of towels several times. Mohammed (Nick name "Smiley") from beach service was remarkable friendly and service oriented.
Watch out for some very spikey shells in the sand. We didn't use the pool.
Room
The room offered everything what we expected from a 5 star hotel. However, the feelgood factor was much lower this. The furniture is very simple style, in-room internet was most of the time not working, the aircondition was very noisy.
Tips and recommendations
Use the shuttle service to El Gouna Downtown and Marina. L.E. 5.00 (~ USD 1,00) for a 24 hours bus ticket. They leave every 15 Minutes from/to the hotel.
