Family run friendly and comfortable hotel
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThis 3* hotel although not modern was comfortable with spacious rooms, with the exception of the lounge which only had armchair seating for about eight persons + another dozen or so on standard chairs on the raised section. Food was well prepared and was always a choice of something other that the set menu. Both b&b and half board were offered
Location
The hotel is situated on a corner on the main street about 5 mins walk from West station and 10 mins from Ost station. There didn't appear to be any specific parking area for the hotel. The hotel has an open to the street bar and open to the public adjacent to the front entrance which was certainly well used and a little noisey but we found we didn't hear the bar from our room which was on second floor more or less over the bar.
The staff here were exceptionally friendly including the owners wife who made frequent contact with all the guests for a chat. Our waitress had excellant knowledge of English and I understand at least another two languages. The room was cleaned each day and beds turned down each night. The staff went out of their way to be of assistance to our enjoyment of the hotel. We discovered that many guests were visiting this hotel for the umpteenth time and were meeting up with friends they had met there before.
Gastronomy
The restaurant area was divided into 2 areas one for the evening meal with your own seats and one area for breakfast where you just sat at a vacant table. This hotel provided the closest thing to a full English breakfast in the 2 weeks we were in Switzerland. Bacon and sausages were provided and there were hotplates to either boil, fry or scramble the eggs. The usual continental breakfast items were also available as was a variety of home made jams - simply delicious. Drinks were similar to other hotels - rather pricey
Sport & Entertainment not available
Not being sports minded we didn't look into this area but from general observation there didn't appear to be any sports activities or pool. We were not aware of any live entertainment at this hotel.
Room
The room we had was of quite reasonable size, decoration and furnishings, complete with small balcony overlooking the side street. The bathroom was again of reasonable size with fairly modern facilities. The bath was a little awkward, it being designed with a slightly raised area to sit on but it made the sides rather high. A small stool was provided to ease the entry into the bath which also doubled as a shower. A mini bar was provided but not used by us. Towels were replaced if left in the bath, no tea/coffee facilities provided in room. It was very much cheaper to phone home using the hotel room phone than by using a mobile. Overall we were more than satisfied with the room.
Tips and recommendations
Recommended trips would be to the Jungfraujoch approx £85 cost without any swiss travel tickets. Care here as there is no free trip at best is half fare using the Half Fare card. Boat trips on the Lakes especially Thun. The Aareschlucht gorge near Meiringen is well worth a visit walking on walkways suspended above the gorge some 1400 meters long taking a good 45 mins from end to end. This hotel features in the upper end of the price bracket for 3* hotels in the Swiss Travel Service brochure but worth it.
