I stayed at this hotel for two nights in December after a Carribean cruise. A reward after my retirement after 30 years as a Police officer.
We arrived very early on the Friday morning and were quickly checked into our room. A good start as we wanted as much time as we could to explore New York. We had booked a double room via a travel agent who we have used for many of our holidays. On entering our room we were confronted by a single bed. I asked a chambermaid on the floor what type of room this was, and she confirmed it was a single room.(She did not see my partner in the room.)
I returned to the reception and spoke to the lady who checked us in. I stated that there had been a mistake and we had been given a single room, and the room was not a double room as stated on the booking form which i had with me. At this point she stated that the room was a double room. I pointed out the fact that if it was a double bed why was there only one set of pillows, and invited her to come and look at the bed. She merely stated that she had worked there 6 years and she knew her rooms.
I informed her that i had spoken to a chambermaid who confirmed to me it was a single room.
On being confronted with this she changed her tact by stating that i had got what had been ordered by my travel agent. Basically she put the blame on them.
I stated that the room was not suitable, confirmed to her that it was a single room and a double room had been booked. She checked the system and stated that a twin room was available for an extra $30 per night. I reluctantly accepted this offer.
I returned to my partner who was still in the single room. Outside was what turned out to be one of the senior bell boys. I asked him what type of room i had been given. He could see my partner. He would not say what type of room it was.
On returning to the UK i spoke to my travel rep, who along with a New York agent confirmed a double room had been booked. Despite being contacted several times the Hotel have refused to reply. To me that says it all.
I can only assume that this was an attempt to extract more money from their visitors by the Hotel. In fact they only got $30 extra off me for the two nights as i made my feelings known to the staff who said i could have the room for £15 per night extra.
As i knew that this was a con i did not eat, drink or spend any more money at this hotel.
If they had offered an upgrade when i arrived, showed me the twin room, i would have taken up their offer. They would have got the $60 per night, plus breakfasts drinks etc for two nights.
My travel agent has refunded my extra outlay at this hotel as gesture of good will.
