Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AI'm in the tourism field (for the past 10 years) and due to my occupation, have had many experiences with the most diverse hotels and hotel chains, as well as a few "must see" hotels. Most people think the Waldorf Astoria belongs to the latter category.
Unfortunately, after having visited this hotel, I must say that it may be evaluated with a maximum of 3*. Perhaps even 2*. The reasons for this will follow at the individual points specified below.
Cleanliness of the hotel = unsatisfactory!
Guests: a colourful mix
Location
At first sight, the Waldorf Astoria had a perfect, central location. Here, I must say that the word is “central” subject to interpretation. It would probably be better for most vacationers to look for a hotel on Times Square.
One needed around 15-20 minutes to walk to Times Square. Everything else, however, was not within walking distance. Here, it was recommendable to jsut take a taxi. They were cheap and fast.
There was a Starbucks across the road from each hotel exit, where one could have a marvelous breakfast.
Airport - hotel approx. 40 minutes by taxi. Around $40 per person. Clarify the price with the taxi driver before leaving for the airport! They liked to cheat one!
The Empire State Building, Central Park, the Financial District, Ground Zero - not everything was doable on foot.
Service was ok. Fast, nice and uncomplicated.
They didn't speak any other language except for English there.
Room cleaning: Okay.
Handling of complaints: Insufficient (see rooms)
Gastronomy
Too expenisve - too expensive and again too expensive! (see rooms).
I don't know any other hotel, which sells so bad quality at such riciulously high prices.
The plates were not really clean, table clothes had holes, plastic cover on the glasses, food was either cooked too long or not enough cooked... I don't have anything to add.
Sport & Entertainment not available
Nothing was available except for a spa area (very small).
Room
We were there at the end of October - the beginning of November and there weren't any clouds, but it was very cold. The rooms didn't get heated. At first, I thought that the heating was broken and I told the reception at 6:00am in the morning. In the afternoon there was a message on the answering machine of ther hotel room telling me slightly annoyed but courteous that at this time of the year the heating hadn't been
turned on yet. Full stop.
Another problem was that the windwos were leaking and that it was drafty day and night in the room.
The rooms were very small, worn-out and terribly in need of renovation.
The bathroom color was already slightly yellow- but unintended, as the yellow color came from the deterioration of the room over the years.
None of the towels were clean. White - but with stains. Red or brown. You could find everything. There were also stains on the exchanged towels.
The beds were comfortable and typically American. 2 mattresses and lots of cushions… you could sleep well.
There was pay tv available but it was very expensive. A normal film cost approx. 15$.
The prices for the room service were ridiculously expensive. I have never seen a worse price-performance ration in any other hotel before.
You could for example order a hamburger with fries and a glass of ice water (normal water with ice cubes) and one of the employees got it too you relatively quickly. When I then saw the the bill of almost 50 $ (FIFTY!) afterwards, I started to wonder if this was being a bad joke.
There wasn't a balcony.
Tips and recommendations
Book rather a hotel at Times Square. The location is better, the price is cheaper and the catering is better as the restaurants were direcetly outside the hotel.
Unfortunately, this hotel has never been and still isn't what you would expect it to be!
