The area was nicely arranged and neat. The hotel had (in total, with the resort) about 400 rooms, 3 pools, a lagoon beach and another beach by the sea (but you had to take the bus to get there).
The room, the area and the restaurants, etc. were always clean. The dishes, etc. were clean too. Nothing to complain. We had all inclusive. Extra costs for example for fresh juice for breakfast. Towels for the pool (1 per person) were handed out for the towel card at various spots. Since the hotel was built by Germans and was now managed by Belgians , there were many Belgian and German guests. But also Dutch, English and French, Spanish, Finnish and a few East Europeans. The age structure was also mixed, but when we were there, most guests were about 50 to 65 years old. Since no school holidays, there weren't many kids around.

The drive from Hurghada airport took about 35 minutes. That was totally okay. We didn't go to Hurghada, so I don't know how far away it really was and how you could get there.
The centre of El Gouna was about a two minute's walk away. It was nice, there were shops and restaurants everywhere. You could find everything from Irish pubs to Chinese restaurants. The salespeople weren't pushy. It was also possible for women to leave the hotel in the evening on their own or go to the bank without being afraid or being approached. That was very pleasant. El Gounda provided everything from a hospital to a school. As far as I know, there were discos and a cinema too. But we didn't make use of them, we always had enough to do. There were trips offered too, such as to the lagoon or snorkelling trips for a whole day or a few hours. You could also hire bicycles and drive around. We recommend a quad bike tour, there were agencies in town offering those. You didn't depend on a tour operator. Our tour was great. You could also go to Luxor (single journey by bus about 4 hours, it was very nice too) or to Cairo, but that was too far away for me. There were other possibilities too, but that was enough for us.

Most staff was friendly, and we even had a favourite waiter. They weren't pushy, as we'd experienced it before. There were some who didn't seem to like their work (you could notice that for example from the ice cream portions you got). In general, it was totally okay, though. Everyone spoke English, and some also knew other foreign languages. We had no communication problems. The rooms were cleaned properly, no complaints here. There was a laundry service too, but we didn't use it. A nurse came to the hotel regularly, I don't remember what times exactly, but when we once needed her, she was there. Child care in the morning and the afternoon. Since we didn't have any kids, I can't say anything about it, though. Complaints were handled immediately. Everyone was trying hard. There were some misunderstandings because of the language, they didn't understand what I really wanted, but they were at least trying ;)

Two restaurants were All Inclusive. One was open from 8-10.30am and from 6.30-10pm, the other one from 7-10.30am, from 12.30am-3pm and from 6.30-9pm. They offered ample buffets every day. We basically liked the food, we always found something tasty. Well, we didn't try the cold cuts in the morning and had enough of all the jam after two weeks (we both don't like cheese), but the choice was large and the quality good. Salads etc. were available, and English breakfast was offered too. Quality and quantity of food and drinks were very good. The coffee seemed very good ("real" coffee), and the local beer drinkable and totally okay (I didn't try both of it). There were different buffets every day, but always rice and potatoes. The pasta dishes were mostly covered by cheese which I didn't really like. Moreover, there were two a la carte restaurants, a Belgian and an Italian one. The Italian restaurant cost 5€, I don't know about the Belgian one. But we didn't go there. The Italian restaurant seemed always full, though.
There were bars with drinks at every pool, at the lagoon beach and the sea beach. They also offered ice cream from 11am-5pm, and the beach bars offered grilled dishes as well as salads and sandwiches. You could have soft drinks, beer, coffee, etc. everywhere. Only the sea beach bar didn't offer alcoholic drinks, but that wasn't that bad.
People who preferred a quiet atmosphere didn't go to the main restaurant but to the smaller one next to the Peanuts bar, as there were always lots of people in the Sunny restaurant. There were two bars in the evening, the Peanuts bar and the Sunset lounge where we never went. It was rather quiet too. In the Peanuts bar, however, there was always a lot going on, live music every evening and sometimes also an evening entertainment programme. The cocktails were really bad, though, they sounded delicious, but most of them just had the same ingredients. But that was the only negative thing about the bar. Imported alcoholic drinks cost extra. But we didn't buy those.
We only tipped our favourite waiter in the end. There were collection boxes for tips everywhere, though. After midnight, you could continue partying inside the Peanuts bar which offered music and drinks for money. No All Inclusive service after midnight. But we preferred our bed/our room anyway.

Sport & Entertainment

There were some entertainers around, but they seemed to have problems attracting people to take part in the sports programme. Even the younger ones preferred lying on their chairs, so there wasn't much going on except for water polo. Sometimes beach volleyball too. Too bad. But table tennis and table football were included, rackets could be borrowed for free. Bocce was free at the lagoon beach and the sea beach, we played from time to time. So, unfortunately, the entertainment programme didn't offer much.
There was a dance show most on evenings, karaoke on Thursday and game night on Friday.
There was a small shopping arcade for souvenirs inside the hotel. We just once went there, we didn't need it. You could also go shopping in town. There was at least one super market which was open 24/7 and wasn't expensive at all. A mostly available computer for internet access, but in the evening, there were lots of mosquitoes around there. But you could also use your own laptops. We didn't bring one, though.
We didn't really like the beach, as it wasn't a white sandy beach. The sand was rather brown and looked like mud or the like... But it was clean and tidy.
There were three pools, one of which with slides which could be used twice a day for 90 minutes. Fun. The pools were absolutely okay, and you could also play water polo, there were goals at two of the pools (the ones without the slides). At the sea beach, you had to walk very far until the water got deep. It was nice for families with kids, of course, they could play there very well. You could also go snorkelling, but had to be careful because the kite surf beach was right next to the normal beach.
You shouldn't expect new beach chairs, so you won't get disappointed. Most of them had screws replaced, some were a bit unsteady. But they were fully functional and okay. We weren't bothered. Plenty of sunshades available too.

Room

The rooms were clean and tidy. The only negative thing was that there wasn't much storage space available There was a wardrobe, of course, (which had a relatively large amount of shelves), but the bedside cabinets were just small tables. There was no drawers to store small things, and no pegs for jackets or other stuff in the corridor (we used lamps and door handles). That could be improved with just a little money and effort. But it wasn't really bad. The shower curtain looked nice, but the bathroom got wet when someone had a shower... So we stuck it to the inside of the shower in order to keep the bathroom dry ;) It wasn't really practical. The bed was absolutely okay, it wasn't 2x2metres, but about 1.60m wide and had only one mattress. It was neither too hard nor too soft.
The safe was included, but the description to set the code was a bit hard to understand. You might want to have someone showing it to you. We only used the air conditioner in the evening, not during the night, as it got too cold. It worked perfectly. International TV stations available in English or in German, and even some other small European and local stations. We cleared the mini bar and put our own stuff in there. The prices were really too expensive. There were no coffee maker, no water kettle and no hair drier (but we didn't use one anyway). Telephone available in the room, but we didn't use it either.
Our room was towards the pool, which was really okay. In the back, there was the go-kart track, and it must have been quite loud when it was used. But we never heard anyone driving there.

Tips and recommendations

When we arrived, the sun set at about 6pm, when we left, already at about 5.30pm. But it rose between 5 and 6am. We never saw any clouds, but always had beautiful sunshine and about 33-38 degrees. But we didn't feel it was too hot, it was absolutely okay. Normal handy reception, everything okay. The sea was about 26/27 degrees warm, really pleasant. The pools were about 25 degrees. If you want to see the typical Egypt, you shouldn't come here, because there were mostly rich Egyptians living in El Gouna. There were 19 hotels and many private villas. Everything was artificial, but really nice. In the meantime, there was a second harbour being built, because the rich Arabians couldn't get any space for their yachts in the already existing harbour. We saw some yachts there, oh my goodness... There was a lot of money lying at anchor. Plus, a 6 star hotel was being built (but at the edge of El Gouna, you didn't see any building site). There wasn't a lot to be considered. Just try to relax and have a great holiday! It was the right place for people who liked to dive, as there were many beautiful diving spots nearby, also with wrecks.
