My week at Villa Hotel Monica
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThis hotel is beasutiful and is in a wonderful location. There are views from most rooms of the Dolomite mountains in Northern Italy. The rooms are all very well appointed and have plenty of storage for all your belongings. The common rooms are also lovely, with small and large meeting places, a comfortable bar, and an excellent dining room. There is an underground garage for guests (nice in winter) and a ski room adjacent to the garage, with guest lockers.
Location
This location, at the northern limits of the famous Dolomites, is excellent. The views are great and you can purchase a bus pass so that you can get from the village to all other areas of this section of the Dolomites. The Pustertal is a beautiful valley, and this is the highest village in that valley. The hotel is located in a quiet area of the town. Toblach/Dobbiaco is one of my favorite towns in this area.
Service here is excellent. The owners are always available and the staff has served here for many years. Everything is beautifully maintained, with flowers spilling out of the window boxes on every level.
Gastronomy
The food is delicious. We always get half board here, so we enjoy a grand buffet breakfast and a delectable 3-course evening meal. There is also a bounteous salad bar each evening. They serve some of the best homemade Grappa, and any other type of drinks you might imagine. Cuisine is more in the Tyrolean style, with some Italian thrown in. Atmosphere is great. You will become fast friends with other guests during your time here.
Sport & Entertainment
There is no pool, but we never seem to miss it. In winter, there are hundreds of kilometres of Nordic ski trails nearby, as well as winter walking trails. In summer, there are literally hundreds of hiking trails. All trailheadsare accessible by the local bus, so you can park your car and enjoy or arrive by train with no need to drive. Each Wednesday there is a Keller Abend in the downstairs party room. The hotel owner is one of the musicians. There is also a nice "meet and greet" party on Saturday or Sunday evening, so all the guests for that week can meet up. There are public pools in nearby villages.
Room
Rooms are beautifully appointed, with views of the sharp-toothed Dolomites. There is plenty of storage for all your gear and clothing. Of course, everything is immaculately clean.
Tips and recommendations
You can be as active as you wish here. There are great opportunities for hiking, visiting mountain huts, Nordic and Alpine skiing, winter walking, etc. The Dolomiti areas are quite cold in winter, but the sun shines most days. Summers are nicely warm with cool nights.
