Friendly, welcoming hotel, great staff
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A ATraditional, Swiss hotel. Very clean, excellent meals. One baby when I stayed and no other children, but it was not school holidays, mostly older guests. Very friendly, made to feel very welcome. Recognised by the manager and other staff as a returning guest and given warm welcome. Nothing too much trouble for the staff. Could be run to the mountain train (5 min walk) in electric "car" on request. Cosy lounge with log fire, which was always lit in the evenings. Friendly, happy atmosphere, with a very charismatic, involved manager who is always in evidence.
Location
Very convenient for walking to all facilities, in a very quiet location with wonderful views. Easy to walk to cable car or train in 3 - 5 mins or free shuttle service offered. Transfer from Bern airport takes 1 hour to Lauterbrunnen, with a short mountain railway journey up to Wengen. Takes a total of 3 hours from Zurich/Geneva. Luggage transported to and fro by porter to the mountain railway.
The staff are friendly, welcoming, very willing to help, always cheerful and understand and speak excellent English, many have worked at the hotel for several years. Check in is efficient and quick and nothing is too much trouble. Tea/coffee making facilitiy in room. Spotlessly clean, towels changed daily if you wish. Laundry service if required and offer of a shuttle service to the cable car/mountain railway in Wengen.
Gastronomy
One restaurant and one bar. Wonderful chandeliers in the traditional dining room, tables laid with spotless white table cloths and candle on table lit for dinner. Excellent buffet style breakfast, from smoked salmon and scrambled egg to lovely croissant, fresh fruit, boiled eggs, cereal etc. Tea/coffee served to your table. Five course dinner on 6 nights was delicious, all but the salad bar served at your table, choice of main course and the weekly buffet dinner on the 7th night was outstanding. The food is excellent. Beautifully presented and served.
Sport & Entertainment
Sauna and internet access available which I did not use. Ski room at hotel but can also use, for no charge, the ski room at sister hotel nearer the cable car/mountain railway which saved carrying skis/boots the short walk to and fro and worked very well. I tried the excellent wellness centre with whirlpool, sauna, steam room and loungers with view over valley which is available free of charge to Wengenerhof guests at this sister hotel. Small selection of gifts to purchase in the Wengenerhof, weather forecast every day on noticeboard and with menu at breakfast.
Room
I had a north facing, single room without balcony which was a good size, easy chair in addition to table and chair. Television, telephone, safe in the room, bath with shower over, plenty of mirrors, hairdryer and line if required for drying. Tea/coffee making facility, attractively packaged welcome biscuits and 2 chocolates on arrival, enough power points and room well sound proofed. Adaquate wardrobe/drawer storage for one person. Towels/sheets changed on request, daily if required. All very clean. Towelling robe in room.
Tips and recommendations
My mobile worked very well. Telephone costs to UK on room phone were reasonable and in winter the hotel is well heated. In my experience the Wengenerhof is an excellent hotel for winter sports/walking holidays.
