Review based on the skier and non skier's holiday
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThis is a four star, traditional hotel which is really well run and organised where ALL of the staff are extremely friendly, helpful and efficient. Nothing is ever too much trouble no matter what is requested. All of the staff speak a variety of languages and pride themselves or remembering the nationality of a guest and therefore addressing them in their language and remembering small things such as whether they have tea or coffee for breakfast. As a non skier I was in the hotel for considerable amounts of time and witnessed the staff dealing with all other guests apart from myself in the same manner. For example the elderly lady who is thoughtfully helped to the lift or who has toast made and brought to her table or the skier who has had an injury and is taken, by hotel transport, to medical appointments etc. Room service is good - sheets changed everyday, bathrooms cleaned everyday etc. The hotel is warm and inviting and furnishings are of a good standard. There is a mixed age range the eldest lady whilst we were there was 102 making her annual return. There were a number of people that we recognised from previous years and a number who told us that they had been coming for many years (often twice a year for lengthy periods) Apparently a couple who normally sat at the table we were given who have been coming from Pris winter and summer for 40 years !!There were a wide variety of nationalities as well as a wide range of compositions of groups ie couples - young and older, families, groups of retired men who's partners did not wish to come skiing, mixed groups , mothers and daughters etc.
Location
The hotel is approximately 10 minutes from the station and 5 mins from the centre of the village whilst at the same time being just on the edge and ideal for walking. The public transport system as with any in Switzerland is excellent and the trains from Lauterbrunnen are frequent and on time. There are also good rail and cable cars links to other parts of the Bernese Oberland. From Lauterbrunnen it is only a 50 minute coach trip to the lovely airport at Bern.
Please see comments in box 1. Check in is very efficient and the managers go out of their way to ensure that you are checked in as quickly as possible even on busy changeover days. This year we were invited to take up the offer of staying in a three bed apartment (chalet) in the grounds - excellent again for the non skier. Confirming to me that the management are 'on the ball' Nearly all of the staff have been at the hotel for a number of years working both the summer and winter season which i believe says a lot about the atmosphere in the hotel.
Gastronomy
There is one restaurant which serves breakfast and dinner - I think that all guests partake of both. The service hours are very reasonable suiting the early risers and diners as well as those who take a more leisurely stance. There is an extensive wine list, there are five courses with a choice on most of the courses. One evening a week there is an excellent buffet with a chance to meet the chef who has prepared the food.
The food is delightful, nicely presented, expertly cooked and with a range of foods to suit everyone's palette. Tablecloths are changed for every meal and the china and cutlery etc are clean and in good condition.
Sport & Entertainment Unused
I cannot comment on this as we did not use any of the facilities.
Room
This year we were invited to stay in a three bedroomed chalet (see above) whilst we ate in the hotel it was nice to have the opportunity to prepare lunch for myself in the chalet - we would consider booking this chalet for a family holiday after noting how well equipped the apartment was. Sheets, towels and toiletries were of a high standard. There was a large balcony with table and chairs, beds were comfortable and all very clean.
Tips and recommendations
We have been to this hotel for the last three years and cannot fault it. It has a charm typical of the Bernese Oberland of years ago but with modern conveniences.
