Hotel Wengener Hof

The hotel is situated on the edge of the village in a quiet part of Wengen. Ski boots can be left at the sister hotel (Silberhorn) right next to the railway and gondola stations which is great for people like me who don't like walking too far in skis and boots. Transport all around the Wengen/Grindelwald and Murren areas is superb.

Service at the hotel cannot be faulted. The staff were all exceptionally friendly and helpful. The hotel has a sauna which I used every day. There is no pool. There is no shuttle bus but one is not required, the hotel being only about half a mile from the stations. The electric car is available on request but we preferred to walk.

There is a good range of food on offer both at breakfast and dinner. Breakfast has an array of hot and cold selection and even the traditional bottle of ice cold Proseco which was really nice. Dinner is 6 courses if you include cheese as the final course. Three of the courses have a choice of three so there is something for everyone. The quality could not be faulted.

There is a sauna and solarium but no pool. I did not notice any evening entertainment but as we were on a skiing trip we were shattered and just wanted to go to bed.

The rooms were clean, the beds comfortable and well appointed. We had a lovely big balcony overlooking the Jungfrau mountain and Lauterbrunen in the valley.

The internet card I purchased didn't work so I got a refund and used my BlackBerry instead for phone calls, emails etc. I am sure it is a great base for the summer as well as winter. One tip - be careful with taxis. We got a taxi from the hotel to the railway station (half a mile at best) and were stung CH20 when we could have walked it in no more than 10 minutes. Recommendation - the train service is simply fantastic. This is the best way to get up the mountain with your skis etc. The gondola is fast but may not be good for people who don't like being squashed up with 100 or more skiers and boarders.
