Wengener Hof review
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AThe hotel is full of character, warm, friendly and welcoming. We paid extra for a south-facing room which had a balcony with views of the garden, town below and mountains in the distance. This was well worth it. In the dusk of the early evening, we wrapped up and sat outside, watching the pretty lights below and the mountains..lovely.
Location
Set a little apart and at the upper end of the village, we loved the quieter location and the picturesque surroundings and views. It was an easy walk back and forth to the centre, where the ski-hire shop, main lift and train station were.
Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The service was excellent, with attention to detail. The waiters were well-informed re the food and wine and again, nothing was too much trouble.
Gastronomy
The restaurant was very tastefully decorated and everything was of a very high standard. The food served was excellent, beautifully presented and delicious! There were choices everyday and once when I wasn't able to eat a few courses with chilli etc, it was no problem to order something different and to my taste.
Sport & Entertainment
Ski-hire facilities were excellent again. The shop staff were very friendly and helpful, with advice on the slopes and where to go. We skied everyday and then relaxed in the restaurant at the hotel in the evening, so cannot comment on other facilities.
Room
We were pleased to find a kettle and tea-making facilities. The room was well-equipped, very clean and towels were replaced every day. Everything was very comfortable. Perhaps the socket could have been easier access-wise for re-charging mobile phones, but that is a minor point.
Tips and recommendations
The south facing room with a balcony was definitely worth paying a bit extra for.
The wine list was extensive, with some excellent, but expensive wines. The house wine was very good, but more middle range/priced wines would have been appreciated.
If ski-ing, do consider using the train to go up, we preferred it to the main lift, and it gave access to some lovely routes. Don't miss the trip to the top of the Jungfrau and the glacier...wonderful views. Grindlewald was nice, too, but as a resort, we preferred Wengen, with no cars and a lovely, unspoilt village atmosphere.
