Absolute Gem in the town of Gseng
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A AEverything you could want in one place. Full breakfast and dinner catering (called Half-Board) in a buffet breakfast and three set menu dinner. Not fancy, but typical Austrian food of the region, wholesome and plentiful, each day with 3 courses, and top-ups for those who were super-hungry.
The hotel room was a 2-bedroom apartment, and each bedroom had a bathroom, and there was a shared living area with fully fitted out kitchen (which we didn't use).
I believe this is rated as 3-star, but would suggest anyone looking for a 4-star experience will be well pleased and pay only 3-star prices.
Location
We went for a ski trip to the Russbach (Dachstein West) area. It was a 200m walk to a poma lift to the main run, and on some days we took the car to the main lift and parked for free. It was no problem and a great location.
Werner and his team were the very definition of fine Austrian hospitality. They met every need, were very helpful and we couldn't praise them more highly.
Gastronomy
Breakfast: buffet of typical Austrian foods (cereals, meats, cheeses, yoghurt, breads, etc)
Dinner: 3-choices,3-course set menu as part of the half-board arrangement.
The dining room/restaurant was laid out well and service was very prompt. Food was cooked well and beer/wine/schnapps selection was sufficient for our needs.
Sport & Entertainment
We came to ski and I would have to say we were amazed with the extent of skiing at Dachstein-West/Russbach. It is a hidden secret, with a good mix of challenging runs, and easy runs for novices. There was plenty of off-piste runs for those wanting a challenge, and ample equipment rental options.
The extra facilities in the hotel included pool (table) room and sauna/relaxing area, and storage place for skis. There is an outdoor swimming pool for summer guests, but we only got to see it from the window!
Room
Serviced daily, very spacious and beds were extremely comfortable. Decor was typical country Austrian style - exposed wood lovely and fitting with the region.
