A real gem of an hotel
Enlarge letters A A Downsize letters A A In the Salzkammergut, 45 minutes drive to the east of Salzburg, is to be found a real gem of an hotel set in an idyllic location - the Im Weissen Rossl, or White Horse Inn, made famous by the operetta of that name by Ralph Benatsky in the 1930's. The hotel also appears in a subsequent movie of the operetta. The location of the hotel, overlooking Lake Wolfgangsee and surrounded by mountain scenery, is truly magnificent. The hotel is on the edge of the lake in the tiny village of St Wolfgang, which is traffic free, apart from the vehicles of the local residents and, on the occasions we have been there, horse-drawn carriages.
This family-friendly hotel has been run by the same family for several generations and has expanded significantly in that time to include 94 spacious, modern bedrooms and extensive, and fully equipped, beauty, spa and keep-fit facilities. This expansion has in no way detracted from the friendly and helpful atmosphere of the staff. A major attraction is the outside swimming pool and Jacuzzi which float in the lake and are heated to 30/34 degrees Centigrade throughout the year. A swim in the pool, followed by a dip in the Jacuzzi, when there is frost on the ground and ice on the lake and the mountains are covered in snow, is a really unique experience!! For the less adventuresome, there is also a large indoor heated pool and a spacious sun terrace.
The two restaurants of the hotel serve up interesting and truly enjoyable dishes. For dinner, there is a choice of international cuisine, Austrian specialities or, for the weight conscious, a low calorie selection. Dinner includes a buffet starter course. The breakfast and dinner buffets are mouth-watering, and are the most extensive and attractive that I have ever seen. Despite the large number of guests eating together, the staff always manage to make sure that there are no shortages on the buffets. The waiting staff are all very friendly and attentive and, under Herr Fred's watchful eye, ensure that each meal is an enjoyable occasion. There is an extensive Austrian wine list, with prices to suit all pockets. Herr Thomas, the sommelier, holds weekly wine tastings in the hotel's wine cellar.
This hotel is one where every guest is made to feel most welcome. The service, the food, the hotel facilities and the location all contribute to make each visit truly memorable. Since our discovery of the Im Weissen Roessl, it has become one of our favorite European hotels. Other guests are also of the same opinion because we have met a surprisingly high number of repeat visitors on each of our trips to this delightful corner of Austria.
